Took Molly out this Am for her morning constituional.Saw her dart across the parking lot then come flying at me.. Ah Crap skunk hiding under a car tagged her in the nose area. Had to dress quickly , race down to 24 hr grocery store for peroxide and baking powder, already had the dawn detergent. Got back here mixed up the concoction and had to apply to her nose and face area , but stay away from eyes. Hell this dog is a stubborn mule at times. Got her rinsed off and applyed again and this time we got it all off!!!!! Yeah Me!!!
Holy Crap it is hard to get that smell outta your nose , but at least she is free from odour now.
Will take a flash light with me now even though there are 2 huge dusk to dwan lights i had installed ,i will check under vehicles now before she goes out!

I currently have 5 racoons and one skunk lingering around my home (in a residential area). Two adult racoons who love to look at my birdfeeders and contemplate how to get to them even though they are being spotlighted. One momma racoon with two puffballs who run like the wind when I turn the backyard spotlights on. The skunk - who doesn't care if you turn lights on, spotlight him, or walk toward him (he actually doesn't smell so you don't know he's there) so I turn the spots on, walk out with my flashlight and check the yard........then leash the dog and go out cautiously.
I never let my dogs go without a leash...... for the above reasons!!

Just for you "Skunked" Doggy Mamas

I too am a dog lover, what you might call a 'doggy daddy'.

In honor though of your skunks, I give you these pretty pictures.

Joanne,

My Scottie got sprayed at ten o'clock at night after all the stores were closed, I had peroxide and dawn but no baking soda. We drove over a half an hour to Walmart just so we could get the stench off of him.

That combo works wonders!!!

Just a side note, whenever he gets wet for the next month that smell will still linger a bit.

We have a very social cat who loves to bring home strays with him for us to take care of. One year he brought home a litter of little kittens, carrying them home one at a time in his mouth, and dropping them on our front porch!
We also have a neighbour who is animal CRAZY so, when she found a skunk had given birth in her shed, she set out blankets and a heating lamp for them to keep them warm, and fed them every day. It didn't take long for Dick, our cat, to bring them home to our place. It was pretty cute watching the little ones play with Dick all day and night. Then the touble started, and they began spraying. The fun ended when Dick got sprayed dead on in the face, ran into the house and buried himself under the covers in our bed, on our brand new sheets. GRRRRRRrrrrrrr.

recipe please!

Is there a recipe for the skunk neutralizer? How much of each item?
I have 3 dogs, one especially I could see her getting into trouble with a skunk. Might be nice to have the recipe on the fridge.

BTW, we have a client who has a pet skunk in her home. My employees hate delivering parties to her home. Hemingway(named so because he drinks and sleeps all day) is always underfoot, loves to fling his tail up to spook them. I think he knows they are scared.

IIRC, it's equal parts baking soda, dawn, and peroxide.

Joanne: Thanks for the recipe. I'm going to keep this handy. Years ago my golden retriever thought the "little black and white kitten" was just another friend on the farm. My vet advised me to do the tomato juice trick. Yeah right! Not only did my dear golden turn into an Irish Setter but she shook herself in my bathroom. I had red tomato juice running down the tiles. Looked like a scene from Psycho!! I now have another golden, who runs around the farm all the time. My only hope is that because she is such a scaredy-cat, she will run away instead of engaging in any friendly talk. Gudrun

I hope your pup is smarter than my last dog. He got sprayed in the face, was totally miserable during the dawn/baking soda/perox thing as we washed him twice. Sulked afterward too. Figured he would avoid the b&w creatures like the plague.

Lo and behold, about 2 months later, he got skunked again! And my then-17 year old cat got it too the following week.

And it is true that every time it rains or your dog gets wet in any way for a month or so, that lovely aroma comes back to haunt you.

It's amazing how much we all love our PETS more than ourselves...but I'd probably kick the SPOUSE to the curb if he caused me so much hassle, LOL!

Good luck de-skunkifying!
