Farmers Union enters flower business

VELVA, N.D. -- The Farmers Union has decided to enter the flower business in north central North Dakota.

The Farmers Union of Velva, Butte and Drake opened The Country Bouquet at Velva's main intersection on U.S. Highway 52. It offers ready-made and special order bouquets, live plants and gift items. Orders can be placed through Teleflora to send arrangements across the country.

Cory Schmaltz, the Farmers Union general manager, said people might not think flowers when they think of the Farmers Union. But the flower shop is just one more way to diversify the organization, he said.

"There was a flower shop in Velva once before, and I believe there's still a need for one here," Schmaltz said. "I'm looking at what's good for Velva."

Well Hipp hipp horray for Teleflora, once again they show how much they support Florists.

I wonder what it takes for members of Teleflora to open their eyes... One day shops will open their eyes and realize they once had choices, but the choices don't always wait for people to make up their minds.
 
Hmmm, I'm not sure I see the problem Peter? It is a flower shop by the description. They are not competing with any other shops and they are not order gatherers. Just because the Farmers union owns the shop does'nt make it bad does it? I'm sure there are plenty of reputable shops in this country that are owned by corporations or umbrella companies.

Well...I see in our NEW phone books there is an order gatherer! First time in NB< it's catching on everywhere...I am going to call today, to see how they handle my call and whom they send it to!!!

Peter, I don't see a problem here.

NO faking their location.
NO trying to be everywhere for everyone.
NO web site.
NO supermarket.

YES it's a retail location.
YES it's a full-service florist.
YES it's local.
YES they are TF members - so what?

Sounds a lot like my shop, actually :)

Forgive me, but what is Farmers Union ??

A bank ? An Insurance co. ??

And I guess I concur, since its a NON-served market...so ?.....

But could be a sign of the times ?? Another thinking the flower biz is all Rosey :) (no pun intended)
