as odd as this may sound, there seems to be a real rush to get out of this business, for some old established shop owners.
Just learned of another family shop being sold, and that makes 5 in the last 4 months.
Would, in YOUR opinion, this be an indication that they are unable to CHANGE with the times, or does it mean that they are fed up!!
We've been in the business longer than ANY of them, and are STILL here...I'm getting lonelier all the time!!
Any pharmaceuticals available to combat this condition??
Mike

Mikey;
Sometimes people just get tired! Like us, with 8 kids & spouses, 19 grandkids, and 1 great grandkid, all who need visiting, it wouldn't take much more than someone with the cash to pay the appraised value of the real estate, and 1 year's gross income, and we would be out of this place in a heartbeat! Someone younger and with more vitality and energy than we are willing to expend, could take the marketing capabilities, and the reputation we have built into this place and do wonders for it!

Maybe call it also burn out, People get tired and if no one from the family takes over, they sell and retire or work somewhere else at a 9-5 job. We all feel that one once in a white, some people when they get tired of it, they sell or get out before they loose it.
That is why it is important to socialize with other florist. friends,
Luc

And some of our towns are supersaturated with flower shops. Using the Sault for an example, we have 18 floral shops for a 75,000 population. We have had two older high profile shops close in the last three years (Flower Junction and Flowers by Murray) and we've got two more that aren't looking that good. We have two flower shops with owners in the 68-75 year old range with no second generation interested in the business. It's only a matter of time before another shop either closes or is sold.

I'm ready for a change, too.....

I don't know what I'd do, but I am just really tired of holidays. I could always get a job in a flower shop. That is not even slightly funny. No, really, as I've said before we are approaching our 23rd year and I am just getting burnt out. I love being my own boss and running things, etc......and all the good stuff, but it sure sounds really, really nice to get up in the morning and just go to work and do my job and go home and not have to worry about anything. I wonder what it would be like to go away for the weekend with my husband on Val. Day. Dream on..... I know I'd get sick of something else too eventually, but it's nice to fantasize about.

I have been saying for some time, that this is enivitable ! That there would be a consolidation within our beloved industry...

For years everyone thought our job was easy "I'd love to "play" with flowers EVERY day" and thus, thhey got into the biz....

Hell, everyone is in or biz...

True, tis sad to see shops close, especially ones we have become accustomed to working with, but times are tough, it takes a toll on owners ESPECIALLY !

This trend will continue for the near future, I say at least another year, perhaps longer, before things begin to level out...

About to take the time to enjoy life here, shop going on the market Feb. 15. Wish us luck!!
