I have just returned from town hall my first time going there in six years for a reason other than handing over lots of money. The house next to mine was forclosed on and the people who lived there left it full of trash which we just realised as the animals are startig to spread it around. The building inspector told me "what do you want me to do you have any idea how many homes are like that in this town, try to call the former owners to get them to clean it up"I pay very high taxes everyone in this town does and I can not believe that this is their attitude it is run by a town council I did just e-mail our senator anyone else that has any ideas on what action I can take other than breaking and entering with a bottle of lysol would be appreciated.

No help here Brad, other than if I were you, I'd contact the company holding the deed and explain to them that for an even wash, I'd pay the taxes on the property and clean up the mess if they sign over the deed...

Might get yourself a deal...

Too many "city councils" are facing shortfalls in their budgets, simply based on declining revenues...they have little funding to do "clean ups". We just had a near tornado a city over from me last week...the city cleaned up about 1/3rd of the trees and said "sorry, thats all we can do, our funds are used up for tree removal" and left...we'll see more of this as time goes on...

Have you given any thought to involving the media? A story on the local news about how the town is refusing to help with this situation might get some action.

Good luck, I'm sure this will be happening more and more around the country in the coming months.

We have one right next door to our house. Girl that lived there had about 9 cats and 3 dogs not to mention her 3 kids. They just up and left, dumped all the garbage out the back door into a metal dog kennel, left kitchen utensils in a car carrier thrown in the back yard. Left mattresses out on the back deck. Since we don't have leaves on the trees in the winter, I had to look at the mess and watch all the trash as it flew into my yard then pick it up with gloves on.
Called the code enforcement officer, he's ignoring us. Won't do a thing. Have a house behind us that is abandoned, three vehicles in the yard all full with magazines, newspapers, paper trash and bottles and cans. Stray cats living in the house, under the house, and a few raccoons too. Code enforcement officer doesn't want to raise any irate feelings with the owner's son. Owner is in another state living with a daughter. Taxes are paid to date on that one.

Rhonda I am sorry it really stinks how some people behave I just do not understand I would be so embaressed. Thanks Boss i am going to contact the prior owner to see if I can find out who owns it great idea and if they give it to me yes Chezbloom I will start a garden and send you some safe tomatoes:hug:.Have to keep your sense of humor in these tough times I wish you all well and thanks for the non floral advice, sorry.

If you've gone through Village Hall, the Code Enforcement Officer and the Public Health Trustee without any help, then it's time to take it to the public.
Appear at your next village board meeting and under the "citizens speak" portion air your concerns. Ask if there are any ordinances that pertain to abandon properties.
The worst that can happen is the board does nothing and the media picks up the story.

My partner is in real estate and handles a lot of foreclosed properties. Once a property has been foreclosed on, the bank owns it. If they are trying to sell the property, the bank will pay to get it cleaned up. But it's the listing agent that handles scheduling this type of thing. See if you can find the listing agent and let them know it needs cleaning up. With so many foreclosures right now, the real estate agents don't always realize that a property hasn't been cleaned. (At least that's what's happening here in Arkansas.)

I'm sure there is a town Ordinance about this. The bank owns the property now and it is now their responsibility to clean it up. But they obviously won't unless enough "noise" is made about it. Look up your towns ordinances. Make alot of noise about it.
You don't name your town in your profile, I was going to find the ordinance for you. I go to alot of Town meetings and when you hold their feet to the fire, something will get done. (usually)
Or find out the name of the bank (should be public record) and Tell them they have to clean up the Hazard!!
Remember the squeeky wheel gets the grease!!

Hi Jennifer it is Derry NH I can't seem to find anything on it.I am starting to wonder if the town took the property as they told me they still have the owner as the person who lost the house but after getting more info it does not make sense for the bank to just let it sit without even a sign outfront. Thanks everyone for your advice.

Hey Brad,
I found it for you. The Bureau of Public Health

"The Bureau responds to residents reports/complaints of health issues at residential properties. Some of the issues we have responded to are: squalor conditions, insect (bed bug) infestation, inadequate heat or hot water in rental units, vermin infestation, and nuisance complaints (trash or junk accumulating on private property)."

I'll send you a PM with all of the contact names.

did you catch the line about bed bugs? Funny to picture a "bed bug inspector"
"Inspector Bed Bug reporting for doo-dy"!! (it's early !!)
