So which one will you use for Valentines Day?

Some think that flat backs are old fashioned. We do both.

For vase arrangements, I have always thought one way versions looked wrong.

The customer could also mistake it as a florist attempting to short them on the flowers.

Now, if the arrangement is for a particular venue, such as a church, then I will go one-way in a vase.

Otherwise, vase arrangements - all around for me.

I agree Joe. The flat backs are good if you know the customer wants to take the roses. That and a del. bx might get them home in one piece.
Otherwise we do all arounds. It's also I think easier to pregreen.

One sided or "flat backed" equals same thing....

A real florist that has real customers knows that there is no such thing.
If a customer picks any bouquet with half of it being just greens you will have a problem. The only acceptable use of this design is in sympathhy/event work where the show is primary. No recipient wants to hold a vase with half just greens, hence a problem coming. The Notion that the IDIOT WS has that we can deliver a "one sided" bouquet is simply moronic. If we sent out bouquets that have their design recommendations used we would not be here today. Therefore we must factor in additional product needed to design the poor bouquets properly.

Sympathy work is just a different matter, it is primarily there for just the event, show is everything. That said, we still cannot send a dozen roses to a service designed "one sided" so until the moroons whom design and sell these items come to this we will simply DNF.

It seems this year the new phrase is "three sided", not not fool yourself, this is the disingenuous WS term for "one sided"

Just say NO!

Cheers for cold clear sunny Or-e-gone

Yes, I do believe there is room for one sided arrangements other than sympathy.

HOWEVER, as far as roses are concerned, it depends.

I worked for a shop in OKC years ago. 1995 to 1997 to be exact. This shop did roses all around most of the year, at valentines day they did them one sided.
And they got complaint after complaint at valentines day. It wasn't my store, I wasn't the manager, I just did what I was told, but I could see that that was bad business.

To me it was the equivalent of buying BIG MAC'S at McDonald's. they always have
"two all beef patties, special sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickles, onions on a sesame seed bun." There top bun, then cheese, then pattie, then bun, then cheese, then pattie then bun and the lettuce and pickle and what not also in there. Then one week a year they stack all the buns together, then both slices of cheese, then both the patties, and the lettuce and onions and pickles and the special sauce in a big glob.
Yes, all the ingredients are there, just not the way you like it.

Valentines day is not the time to change your game. Hopefully hundreds of people see your dozen rose arrangement and are impressed so they use you more often.

Dozen roses - all round

half dozen- modern but flat and front facing

Joan...I think there is lots of places for a front facing arrangement. Over here we do front facing hand tied bouquets, sorry not got any photos just yet but they are very fine and dandy. A lot of my funeral work is not front facing.

Also, we do symmetrical arrangements which naturally front face.

If someone wants to put their flowers on a piece of furniture against a wall for instance, why show the wall the blooms??

On a personal level, i prefer all round though.

McShan has always had flat back red rose with red bow (and styro shread in vases)images on their site until recently. I always thought they were a little dated. Bruce seems to be using WS images instead of his own more.

However, in heavy delivery times like VDay, the flat back would allow for getting more in the van, and as I said before they are easier for the customer to get home.

We make very wide all arounds (because of palm), and we constantly have to tell pick up customers how to sit the carry box in the car seat and pad behind it to protect the all arounds.

It is unfair of the WS's to show pictures of all-arounds with all twelve roses pushed to the front. Of course, know why they do it, but has potential to create customer satisfaction problems.

Roses, always all around!

Think about this, sending 12 of your premium roses, done 1 sided to an office, sure the recipient sees them, but everyone else see's the back side... great advertising on a receptionists desk ;)

We do all kinds of arrangements. Roses, all around. When we send a basket (customer's request) of roses to FH, we do a one-sided arrangement.

We've never (knock on wood) had a complaint about a one-sided arrangement.

Thank you , thank you to those who post that they still do one sided arrangements.
Agree I do my DOZEN roses all around but there are many, many updated one sided styles for arrangements, not old fashioned.
I have never had a complaint about a one sided arrangement in my life. They still work here, with creativity and interest and many times, for less money give it more bang for your buck.

Just to clarify... We do our roses all around unless customer request 3-sided or we feel 3-sided is more appropiate for the application.

My suprise over this thread was the comments made about them having no use basically anywhere, and then futher that one-sided arrrangements in general had no use.

I personally would probably quit designing all together if all I could make was all around arrangements, and I have never been a design snob, but life as a designer would suck in my opinion. I would have to hire someone that thinks one-sided (3-sided) is useless so that I could retain that boring designer.

I have no problem with onesided design...

What I can't stand is one sided with no depth...drives me nuts!

Ours are three-sided 'cheats' and we swag ribbon around the perimeter to kind of fill in the back.

Almost all DZ rose arrangements are shown 1-sided on the web, so every bloom can be seen in the photo.

We do 2 and 3 DZs all around since there are more flowers to fill the space.

I totally agree with Knife's Wife and vghstaffer. 3-sided designs look much more full - especially on lower price points.

Cathy,
Is this what you do all the time or just at Valentines day?

The ribbon looks like a stole..I like it... Glad it's not a Bow! ha!

Especially like the little knots at the ends of the ribbon... nice finished look.
