(AP) - This Valentine's Day, florists want you to "say it with flowers" - especially if you whisper your order directly into their ear rather than use a wire service, such as FTD and Teleflora, or stop off at Costco.
EQUALS
watch out, there are too many ripoffs in buying flowers to make it a safe purchase.

I read the article this again morning and that's the first thing it said to me in that first convoluted sentence. I don't like TFTD or Costco stealing all our customers either, but this is cutting off your nose to spite your face.

I think your off in left field on this. It doesn't say not to buy flowers to me. Just where NOT to buy them.

ps. Then "left" isn't meant to be political

You ALWAYS think I am out in left field, Knife...maybe because I am???

But that first sentence of that article doesn't tell me anything positive, and that's about as far as many people's attention spans will go. And it is a convoluted sentence that isn't written well at all. Whisper it in whose ear? Whisper what?

I care about small independent businesses, yet still it's easiest to go to Costco for a big cake, for instance. So I guess I'm some kind of hypocrite, cuz as much as I hate them and all they stand for (Sams Club for many of you) - I still find myself spending money there.

Do you think much of the American public gives a sh1t?

I'm afraid they don't, or Walmart wouldn't be the giant that it is.

Never been there, or Costco or Walmart, and NEVER WILL!

You right sort of JB, but I think the consumer's thoughts are changing on this, and the majority of folks that shop at Wally-mart are not necessarily those that spend $50.00 on fresh flowers... I could be wrong, but I would bet that less than 20% of my customers shop at Walmart...

disagree

I read an article on shopping habbits/ income brackets and the economy. (growers talks or one of the others I get)

Seems like now the upper income brackets do continue to shop at the hi end clothing and other hi end stores. but they now make a trip to Wally, costco, sams once a week to buy, taking advantage of the lower prices.

They may come to you when they are having an event but I'd bet that they are buy bunches and other flower items from W/C/S.

I received a flier in my church mailbox from the chruch office. Sams was offering 5+ bloom lilies for easter for less than what my grower was charging (not pennies but dollars difference). Not that I am going to use them but not every church has a local florist or greenhouse grower in their congregation.

I can see where Bloomz is coming from. I can speak from experience that the more that the more information you try to give someone about something they don't really know that much about just confuses them. The truth is most people don't care how the flower industry works, and these articles I don't think are helping.

And I would say that about 99% of my customers shop at Wal-Mart. I don't know about everywhere else but here Walmart is no discount store. You can go in the Walmart here and buy produce that is better than half of the other grocery stores in the area, you can get you cell phone service, you palm or Windows mobile device, plasma screen TV, computer, routers, Kitchen Aid Appliances, digital cameras, nice $100+ area rugs, etc. All while shopping on hardwood floors.

My point? If you think your customers don't shop at Walmart, you are just fooling yourself. For example, when we had an RC Airshow here and one of the people that came went to pick up some items he went to Walmart and bought $300 worth of stuff. He is a Multi-Millonare with a card that costs more than most people's houses.

Different things in different parts of the country... Our Wally has concrete floors...is dirty, and crap piled all over... went the once just to see...

And yes G... I know many of my customers shop there, but I'd bet when they want to send an "event" they will utalize a Real Florist... could be wrong... maybe they want the Wally Logo and Smiley on their sympathy arr ???

My wife shops at Costco at least once a month. She claims they have the best steaks in S.I. and she saves lost of $ on other goods. She still goes to the supermaket to do most of her shopping. Why? I guess because it is convinient (not too far from our house) and their prices are reasonable.
So it is not always about money, or quality. Lots of time it is about convinience and that is why 800-Flowers and Proflowers thrive.
