Would appreciate input on base used for sphere that would be carried for
flower girl or attendant bouquet. Also the method used to insert flowers
so that they are secure and can go into the small base. I am assuming some
type of wet foam base is used. Your input would be helpful.

If I am reading your quesiton correctly, just use an Oasis ball. We do this all the time. Use a loop of ribbon attached to a wooden pick for the handle.

I hope this answers your question.

Joe

I just did this for my jr. bridesmaid this weekend!! We used the smallest oasis sphere and poked a hole from top to bottom with a wooden pick. Then run the ribbon in the top, out the bottom, then bring the ribbon up and tie a loop at the top. This secures the ribbon so that it won't fall apart. Secondly, make sure that you use the Oasis floral adhesive to secure each flower. Those flower girls bang the heck out of them and if you don't secure them they will fall apart.

We have glued two small igloos (usually used for cake topper) together. We fasten ribbon over the portion which we cannot cover with flowers. Most of the sphere is covered by the flowers, so very little, if any, of the ribbon shows except for the loop at the top and a bow at the bottom (if the bride wants that bottom bow). We spray FloraLoc on the point of stem insertion.

What Heather said, except we use a gerber straw instead of the wooden pick. We poke thru with the straw, take out the oasis worm, and thread the straw with the ribbon loop, knotting at the bottom. Then we use a small wooden pick horizontally through the bottom and top ends of the straw. The gerber straw keeps the ribbon dry, and little girls can swing that ball around all day.

We also use clear oasis tape to run a few lines around the oasis ball - I have nightmares about the whole thing just crumbling, so it's my little pet peeve. I think it helps, at least it makes me feel better!'

And don't over-estimate the size of the ball - because the flowers are all around, they get big fast. We have only used the smallest for flowergirls so far.
good luck!

In general, I love Oasis products but think those wet spheres are just too heavy to comfortably carry, especially for flower girls. The ribbon used to suspend them is so taut it looks like a ball and chain (appropriate for a wedding, but that's another thread. ;) )

Ssp, I think you're talking about creating a pomander. Here are my two favorite methods:

In a ribbon/tulle base:
  1. Start with 6" wide tulle or minimum-side #9 sheer ribbon and make a many-loop bow with all the loops the same size ( approx. 2.5-3" loops).
  2. Tie the bow center point with #26 white florataped wire and add the ribbon loop for carrying.
  3. Fluff open the loops to create a spherical shape. Trim back any loops that exceed the diameter.
  4. Base in light foliages and fillers with Oasis Floral Adhesive, gluing deep into the center of the bow
  5. Add spray roses or other circular form feature flowers. Be careful to use plenty of glue when adding full-side roses on the sides and bottom due to their weight.
  6. Add streamers to bottom with Oasis Glue.
  7. Mist with Crowning Glory, allow drying time, bag and refrigerate.

In Back-to-back Oasis Mini-Decos:
  1. Soak 2 Mini-Decos and peel off the paper from the adhesive strips.
  2. Cut a 24"-30" ribbon length for the pomander handle, fold it in half, and place the Mini-Decos on each side of the loops, approx. 9-12" down.
  3. Using waxed string, bind wrap the Mini-Decos to prevent the foam from breaking up.
  4. Lightly green with Ming Fern or wrap with tendrils of ivy, deflexus or sprengerii.
  5. Insert filler flowers and then feature flowers.
  6. Floralock the insertions and mist with Crowning Glory.
  7. Glue in additional streamers after the pomander has dried completely.
  8. Bag and refrigerate.
I have a photo of this method at the shop and will load it later when I get a chance.

Yes thanks joe. Did not know whether wooden pick would hold the weight of
the wet oasis ball.

If you want to make sure, make your bow, attach a long wire through the bow, bend the wire in half. Then run the wire completely through the ball and attach a small wooden pick parrallel to the bottom of the ball. Bind the wire to the wooden pick.

I hope that makes sense.

One other bit of advice, don't let the girls handle the balls prior to walking down the aisle. Hand them out for pictures before the wedding, but take them back until 10 minutes before the wedding.

I actually do this for all the bridesmaids, brides and flower girl arrangements. The less the bouquets are handle prior to walking down the aisle, the better!

I have used the wire ribbon and tulle (glued in the tulle) similar to what Cathy has stated. Works great, light (they can fling them around during/after the ceremony) and can make in various sizes according to the flower girl up to Jr. Bridemaid age.

Pomander photos

Below are a couple more pomander photos.

The white one was made with the double Mini-Deco base as described in my previous post.

The solid peach/pink one was made with slightly larger pieces of foam placed back to back with the jeweled hanger moving through the center. Again, waxed string was bound to keep the foam from breaking up and the design was Floralocked upon completion.

Again, HTH.

Cathy
