I have been trading for 5 years. I trained whilst working in a shop & then completed an intensive flower course with Judith Blacklock in London.
I was referred to Flower Chat via the Flowers and Plants Association.
I hope to be able to bounce ideas off like minded florists and hopefully offer advice where I can. My business is purely wedding and event based & myself ad the girls work from a shed in the garden.

Absolutely LOVE your website and the work is equisite - many many congratulations. However while working from a shed is not an issue in itself the Flower Chat board do only accept businesses that are registered for all taxes, business rates etc and I know that you will be questioned on it.

Given I think you would and could be a valuable addition to the Board can you confirm that you are a trading company paying and dealing with all the horrible red tape so that your application can be moved forward. It may sound harsh but we've been burnt in the past.

Also intrigued that Flowers and Plants gave you our details ... who did you speak to there - I'd like to say thank you or was it from our site.

Carrie

Thank you Carrie. I've been waiting for you folks from across the pond to decide on this one because you know the terminology for the taxes and other requirements for a bonafied business.

C'mon a shed?? Any particular reason why you dont have at least a showroom if you are an events florist? Do you undercut your local florist on the high street?

Sorry based on the amount of people working in my area from a shed and basically undercutting local florists with shops, I am going to vote no. Shops are going to be obsolete at this rate and i for one do not want to chat ideas with people trying to take the bread and butter out of my mouth.

No offence but it's how i feel.

Welcome to flower chat!! your work is wonderful! I bet you could make lovely designs in any area you are working from!!(sand box, the garage) you get my point.. they are VERY nice. YOU GET MY VOTE..

People have you seen how many new people that are working from home?? judging by her work I am sure is is:musical: NOT GIVING it away..shes getting the work because shes good, some of us for whatever reasons don't want shop's in town. I heard from my local wholesaler the only way he's paying his bills is because of event people like me.. Traditional shop's and I say this with a heavy heart will be a thing of the past~ IMO

Tracy, she hasn't answered the pertinent questions. Is she a legal business, does she pay the necessary fees to be in business. Does she have proper refrigeration to house flowers for "events, weddings"........YES, these are pertinent questions. And yes, I am a believer that most anyone can produce a hand tied bokay that will "look" wonderful .... camera or not, but the mechanics suck...........
I'll wait for questions to be answered and especially Carrie's.... she's the expert in the UK.

Just an observation for future reference. In the UK coolers are not the norm simply because our temperatures and trading patterns don't justify them. There are florists who have them but I wouldn't judge a UK one badly if they didn't.

Carrington whilst i fully agree with what you are saying and i indeed do not have a cooler and do not need one. (I have daily deliveries and a shop completely in the shade). A shed is really not ideal to store flowers and does not maintain a professional image in my opinion.

For the US guys, these are not studios like some of the homeworkers have in the US, nothing like it.

Katy, do you have any other employment if you dont mind me asking?

It's funny, some of the world's most sought after artisans work from "sheds", or "studios" as we call them in the west. I've always wondered if creating a flower piece is considered "art". I suppose the consumer decides that.

I too will withhold my vote until we find out if this talented person answers Carrie's and Palm's questions.

I will say that those answers are the critical bit of information......as judging by the website and the like......based on that alone, it would be a yes.......however......depending on how the questions asked by Carrie and Palm's are answered.....that will decide for me.

I have tried to explain this before but i will do it again. In America the homeworkers are so different from over here. For a start Mark, if someone in the Uk had the land to have that shed in their garden, they would not be doing flowers from their home i can tell you. Don't forget land over here is in demand, you could fit our country into one of your states. And, a piece of land that big would be owned by someone with a considerable amount of money.

I cant speak for all homeworkers obviously but the ones i have seen working out of sheds and garages are stuffy little outfits, they undercut the local florist (not like you thom who maintains a decent price for your product therefore not lessening the value of floral design). In general they are holding down another job, again not all, and even if they are legally registered as self employed, i would bet my house that they never go over the tax bracket, so would rarely pay tax. Yes, i am saying that they would pocket the money and not declare it. They dont employ anyone, just get family or friends to help out who i am sure would not declare their earnings either.

I really cannot vouch for American Homeworkers so when i challenge a british one it is because i have come accross a few, believe me.

As a homeworker on here has said, she thinks that b and m florists will soon be obsolete. If we are so against the wire services and others who we claim to be taking the industry, dont forget the 3 or 4 bb's that a town can hold. They not only take away the bread and butter jobs from a commerical florist but they are undercutting to do so.

I dont want people to think that i am on a one woman crusade about this but if we are to vet people, what is the point if everyone can come in? If this lady was in Widnes, i would vote no and i would stop posting if she got in. Personally when i vote i treat it as if they were around the corner from me, and wonder if i would appreciate. Plus the majority of newcomers are literally lurking at the moment.

This is just my opinion, but i sure get a few greenies when i raise this issue so i know i am not alone in this way of thinking.

I will proably get a few reds but you know, I have thick skin, it's ok. The above post is a general post and not in direct reference to Katy who has applied here btw.
