For those of you who are Teleflora, Flower& Magazine has one of the best and most practical article on Design Theory I have seen.

The article discusses scale, rhythmn, balance, etc.

It is well worth reading. I am really glad TF bought out AFS and kept the stuff that matters.

hmm... that reminds me, I still haven't gotten 1 magazine from them..Thanks.........

Yep,

Marie Ackerman made all those arrangements. She is a flower goddess! She sat down with me and looked at my old portfolio, we went through every pic. I learned more from her in an hour than I had in 24 years. It's a fantastic article

I guess I'm going to have to bug the manager for our copy, it sometimes takes her awhile to get it our way from the office.

Not to hijack the thread, but is the Flowers & magazine a part of the shops membership in Teleflora, or is that an extra charge? At the shop I'm presently working at they said they stopped getting the magazine because no one read it . lol That should have been my first warning. I have my own subscription to Florist Review that I get at my home. I'd love to get Flowers & I really miss it.

It costs extra $3.50 per month. Decent tho more artsie fartsie than Florist Review (which is loaded with ads)

I like them both tho I prefer FR as it usually has more of a business focus than design...

but I bet...

opinions vary

Don't feel bad Jon, I too like Florists Review better than Flowers&. Simply because Florists Review is more geared to the selling and business of flowers.

I have always found the best design inspiration from nature.
There are 4 directions for every centerpiece: north, south, east & west.
Every flower has a face that must look at the designer.
New buds are always on top, Bigger on the bottom
We make basically circles and triangles
We all "oooh and aaaaah" over other people's designs. Make sure you always surprise yourself and get better each time and you will be a great designer

Also up and down as well. ;) :)

FR and Flowers& are like apples and oranges. I get both as well as about 8 or 9 greenhouse/garden center/nursery magazines. Most often I learn through Osmosis.

btw, there are a couple good Garden Center Magazines that florists should read. Lots of good ads and articles about outdoor container gardening.

For design inspiration, my two favorite magazines right now are
"Fushion Flowers" - from the UK, I think and
"The Bride and Bloom" from California
The Bride and Bloom is absolutely the best wedding flower magazine out there. You can pick it up at Barnes and Noble.
Subscriptions are cheap - like less than $25.00 for 4 issues.
For business issues, I prefer SAF's "Floral Management"

I get both, and read them, the SAF newsletter, the gardening magazines, even better homes and gardens. I would read the back of a cereal box if it looked interesting enough. Someone somewhere has an intereseting design idea, and something to teach me. Even better when I don't have to buy them. For example, I read Martha Stewart every week at the allergist office. :)
