Hey Everyone, I'm having some difficulty with my bride and choosing flowers for the BM. They are wearing navy dresses and she has picked out lavender roses with white dendrobium orchids. These are clutch bouquets. She wants them to be round, how can I achieve this? Should I wrap the dendros around the bouquet? How do the colors sound, I'm not 100% on them. What other colors and/or flowers could I add? All your help is always appreciated. Thanks!

Well that is a very neutral color to work with, on the dendro, I would wire and tape them, and also you can put them up under as well, Sorry can't think straight today,,,

Navy / blues are terrific neutrals - any color would look great against it. I would advise different colors, or at least point out to her that the lavender will be a very very subtle contrast to the navy.

As to the rose/dendro combo - insipired by the recent design show w.Hitomi Gilliam, I would make a "cushion" of white hydrangea or white carns pulled very tightly. Add the lavender roses, and add individual florets of dendro glued to the top of the carns/hydrangea.

good luck!

If the dedros are long enough tou can wind the ends around and pin them into the bouquet. I have a pic with this tecnique that I will attach. I took a class in CT and this is the teachings of that...I am not sure how the dendrobs will do. You may need to experiment with the stems and how snappy they might be..

The lavendar and white will work with the navy. If you wanted to add some contrast without changing the color scheme, you could throw in a deeper purple. Maybe some deep purple Mascari. I love the little guys. They add so much texture and color, or deep purple lisi. I also like the idea of the lime being added.

As for the orchids, they would look georgeous wound around the bouquet.

Lavender and White do sound very nice although somewhat boring....sorry I don't mean to offend anyone and everyone's tastes are different. When you have a navy background to work with I always love hot pink....it just stands out beautifully in the photos and gives the dress life.
If you want to stick with lavender and white then definately add lime green like Marta suggested....it will definately give it the oooph that it needs...perhaps you could use white roses, lavender lissianthus and lime green orchids....that would look particuarly stunning.
As far as the orchids are concerned you can wrap them around the bouquet somewhat like ivy....have 3 stems connect to each other by parafilm and you still can put the stems in the bouquet as well as having enough length on each one so not to stretch or pull the orchid....hope that makes sense.
I always though just pluck each one off individually and wire them....that way you have more control over them.

Lori that bouquet is fantastic....I love what you did with the callas and I love the ribbon...your very talented!!!

The "navy" dress is the new "little black dress". Consider it, as Tracey has said, as a neutral. (choc Brown is also the "new" black).

While lavender and white can work, lavender is a receding color, so in her photos, the lavender will appear to be a little dull -- almost grey -- and washed out. Pairing it will a brighter flower (hot pink, lime green, yellow, orange, etc). will help to make the lavender not so dull.

Consider the paring of: lime green, hot pink and orange -- it looks terrific against navy. Bring your navy into the bouqet thru the accents of dark blue delphinium.

Your orchid dilemna and the round bouqet -- you could, very carefully, wind three stems of orchids around the outside of the bouquet. Bridesmaids, however, are not careful people, and I would fear that the rough handling of the bouquet by the BM will make the orchids snap in two.

I would, as Queen and Tracey have suggested, remove the orchid florets from the stem, cross-wire each blossom & tape, insert as many as you need to into the bouqet. This will allow you to have a "rounded" shape.

Don't forget that the dendrobium also come in a solid fuschia as well as a fushia/white verigated. Very bold and would look good with your lavender roses.

Hope this helps!
Cheryl

What about Blue Siam dendros, they are a smokey purple and would be awesome with navy. I would use Lime, dark blue delph, purple and lavender.

(The Blue Siam orchid aren't in this picture) But it's the same color scheme.

Just a quick remark/tip. The type of dendro you use I think would best determine HOW you use it.

Thai dendros tend to be shorter stemmed and the florets thicker. So I would probably pluck them and then tape and wire them if you were going to do a polka dot effect with a round clutch bouquet. BTW I don't cross wire orchids. I run the wire down their throats!

Hawaiian dendros are my favorite. I think the florets have a bit more depth even if they are skinnier than the thai. You can get really long dendros and pull them over the top of the bouquet, arching them over the top with a sheltering effect. If you got them long enough, You could make an armature with the dendros and pull the roses through the armature. I agree that hot pink or the lime green would be pretty. If she a "fun" girl suggest the hot pink. I LOVE latin breeze roses for hot pink. and if she's more reserved use the lime green. If she's married to the lavender roses, suggest adding some purple statice to make her purple pop a bit more. Also keep in mind when ever you use white in an arrangement it diffuses your colors.

Jade dendrobs would be a wonderful complement to the navy as well. They are a fabulous green and wine.

I would go with more vibrant colors too. As for the Dendrobs, I snip the buds off when using them in a hand tied bouquet, then just add them to the bouquet as you would any other flowers. This way you see the flower and you don't have to worry about the line if the bride wants a roundy bouquet.

That ribbon is actually an oasis wrap with pins inserted. This was done at a class and the instrutor was giving us tips and ideas to uses the oasis products, we used the stem wrap, the wire colors, bind wire and colored pins..It was great fun..and thanks for the compliment.

Thats okay....its sad to say but sometimes australia is just too far behind hahaha I have never seen that before and I will ask the oasis rep next time I see her all about it. Thanks for letting me know:)

I'm tending to agree with Cheryl about the brighter colors. I think it would really make the whole ensemble come alive. I also agree with Victoria that the Jade dendrobs would certainly look very smart. Do you think your bride would agree to the brighter colors?

I thank everyone for all your responses. I sat down with the bride without having any swatches or image of the dresses. So this is all going off the simple, "oh the girls dresses are navy." With everyone responses I went back to her and she is open minded to other options. She really doesn't know what she wants. The best thing about it is that it is my friend, so I would like to go above and beyond so I can have some more stunning photos for my portfolio. Once again thank you everyone for your GREAT help.
