I just got an order from this wonderful Virginia OG.. and just because I am curious (I am forwarding this order to someone who wants it cause I don't take OG like this ) I went to check out their site for pricing on this
product.
Well www.flowerssenttoday.com is for sale..make them an offer.. ok..everything is for sale for the right price.
But no where on this site could I find a place to place an order. there are lots of links to other OG's including the big 2.. I assume they pay to have these links.. but this site doesn't take orders?? So I pull out the trustly phone book cause you know they have ads in all the books..and low and behold the ad is "flowers sent today" but the web address listed is www.bloomstoday.com or www.bloomsusa.com both of which are of course "family owned & operated"
So.. is there something going on here.. has FLowers sent today figured out a new way to make money?? sell links to the big guys from a site that they think is a big collector of orders?? kind of interesting if he has bambooselled the big 2 into thinking a link from his site is worth big moeny!

or am I totally missing something.

For me, the URL redirects to http://bloomstoday.com/ .

I *think* they are using new names in part because the old one would be difficult if not impossible to trademark. The multiple names must work for them. At one point they held three full-page YP ads under three different names here. (They've now cut back to only one 1/2 page for bloomstoday.com.)

You might have run into a typo-sqatter with an AdSense page.

yUP.. I only put in 1 's'... interesting site though.. wonder if they really get paid for the links or if it is only a way to sell the domain?

They could sell the domain but the owner also gets paid every time someone clicks on a link on that page. They're generally 'content network' ads from AdWords or Overture.

The conversion rate is generally very low for advertisers but can make lots of $ for the page holders, Google and Yahoo.

Examples of typosquatting
  • Wikipedia is a victim of typosquatting: www.wiipedia.org, www.eikipedia.org, www.wilipedia.org, en.wikipedi.org, and www.wikipedi.com [as of 2006], are all websites which contain pop-up ads, spyware/adware downloads, and ad-generating search engines.
  • A related gambit is obtaining "800" numbers that correspond to misspellings; a good illustration is AT&T's sudden abandonment of "1-800-OPERATOR" and replacing it with "1-800-CALL-ATT". It seems that many Americans don't know how to spell operator, enough that MCI Communications was raking in a lot of business with "1-800-OPERATER", reaping the benefits of AT&T's advertising. (In both numbers, the final "R" is superfluous.)
