Hi guys.

I've been asked to make a couple of displays for an art exhibition that is taking place next week. It runs over 4 days.

I've come up with a couple of ideas but wondered about one. I want to display flowers in a large vase and totally submerge them in water.

I know that this would keep for a day or two but how do you think they would last kept in the water for longer?

Anyone done anything along those lines before and what flowers did you use?

Thanks in advance!

Manda

Know the feeling we have 3 weddings on Saturday and have just taken on a function for 34 tables for Saturday too...simply couldn't turn it down. Really longing for Sunday....bliss!

Manda,
Always find the stressfull part the logistics of delivery- we cover 3 counties. There is only 2 of us but through experience we have learned how to plan ahead to get the work done am-pm-am but also have 2-3 very good delivery drivers who work with us over the weekend. Hope you days go well too!

Another idea is to use the Smithers Oasis Aluminum wire and twist and twirl it around so that it is hung over the lip of the vase and the other end is in the water ..... and have attached phalenopsis blooms to various levels on the wire.

The Phals hold well and any submerged flowers will develop tiny air bubbles on the margins of the bloom.....this is due to transpiration

Depending on the height of your vase........Another idea that I have done is to thread anthurium onto monofilament line and submerge that into water......you will need something like a lead fishing weight or something to keep the monofilament and flowers from floating.

Hi there,
Cymbidium orchids are great submerged. Change water once a week (tiny drop of bleach in the water), can last up to 3-4weeks! Look really elegant in a tall vase with some stones in the bottom to help weigh down(& look pretty!).

Ricky, welcome to Flower Chat! Will you be at the SCFA convention in July? I love these ideas for the submerged flowers.

I have also read that using distilled water will help keep the flowers from floating. I have not tried it but would be curious to find out if it works.

I am planning to be there at SCFA. As I understand it from the SCFA president, I will be assisting Gerard Toh AIFD or one of the other designers.

Like Rick suggested. Cymbids work great and they will hold up really well. Here's a pictures done with the wire.

That is absolutely gorgeous! I just bought a few lighted bases. Nice idea! I sponsor a monthly event in a small lounge. Certain areas are dark. That type of arrangement would be perfect!
