all this enviroment talk lately has me thinking....

why don't the wire services stop printing so many directories. we hardly use ours b/c we have computer (disc) directories and internet access.

so why not only distrubute to those florists who REALLy need them, not just to everyone?

probably because they would lose adverstising $$ but really, it would help the enviroment, right?

am i wrong in thinking this way?

is there a way, as florists, to expose this to the greater public to force this change?

thoughts??

Actually, 800flowers (Bloomlink) already has a program in place. You can opt out of the actual book and, in return, they will plant trees. We chose the opt out as soon as it was available.

I contacted Teleflora about the same thing. I also told them that their books have been seen on E-Bay and the information in those directories should not be available to just anyone (it has your personal business info). Nothing ever became of it.

I wish my shop was near one of their headquarters. I would take my old books and leave it on their doorstep! We never open it.

We are not a part of FTD so I don't know what is going on there regarding the directories.

If I recall correctly, FTD will be reducing their print directories by one per year.

You NAILED IT! $$$$$

Their directories are just another CASH COW passive stream of revenues.

Long since outmoded and outdated since anyone who has a WS order transmittal system has all the data on a disc.

The only folks who would need a paper directory are those shops who don't.

All we ever did was to put the useless directory into a bucket of water to destroy it and then, into the paper recyling bin.

However, and as you pointed out, they would loose the advertising dollars and they'll keep on wasting trees.

The really sad part winds up to be that, since most folks don't look at those directories anyway, the florists who put their ads into them, or pay for the Also Served by Listings, and throwing their hard earned money away while trying to go after more HIGHLY DISCOUNTED BUSINESS.

They would be much better off using those ad dollars in their own local market and GO AFTER CUSTOMERS with their 100% SALES plus their 100% $ERVICE CHARGES.

Actually, they don't have to loose any of the money they are making on the directories. 800flowers(bloomlink) has their directory loaded on the bloomlink site. Therefore, people who find it useful to advertise in that medium, can still do so.

yes, but then the poor mail carrier must lug that 50lb book back around his/her route....not really fair to them either ;) but yes, that is another alternative

Tell them to leave it at the PO or in their truck...
