No this isn't a commercial. Just a reminder that in the U.S. the credit rating agencies are required to let you have one free credit report per year--no strings attached. Here is the website to get them. I would HIGHLY RECOMMEND that every person get one every year, just to make sure nothing weird is happening.

Thanks Ted. Use this EVERY year, as my father and I have the same name - only the suffix different. Those three reporting agencies should be ashamed of themselves - given the CONSTANT list of errors I find on my credit reports each year.

Local legislators have been ZERO help, and I have let them know it! Only ONE - a recently elected State Sen. - has responded to my letters. At least he is aware of the issue, and does want to sit down with me. I have not had time in the past month, but will be doing so soon!

BTW - that free credit report dot com is not so free. You have to enroll in a credit watch program... been there, done that and it' ain't FREE! Nifty commercials, crappy company.

The Credit Score program is not being used as it was intended by the person who developed it. And somewhere I heard he was trying to get back into the stream so the abuses could be corrected.

The Free Credit Card program is a major revenue source for the 3 agencies. And how can a free program be a revenue source. How can they advertise so much on a "free" program.

The more often you check your credit score, it drives down your score. And they have ads with a couple sitting on a sofa telling how they check their credit score every week.

There should be a way for small business to be successful in ripping consumers off. IT IS NOT FUN ANYMORE.

Financials, etc. checking you score DOES. ANYTIME it's accessed by anyone other than the owner, the score takes a hit.

Actually Herb, (and just because I love to argue) the site says that there are two kinds of credit searches. One is that you initiate, or know about. That is when you apply for a loan or do something and the company checks your credit. But, there is a second kind that you won't know about. Those are like when a company wants to send you one of those unsolicited credit card offers. Those, supposedly, don't count against you.

Frankly, I was amazed at all the stuff going on with my credit report. Fortunately, there were no problems.

No argument here! You are totally correct. The unsolicited ones - which I forgot about - are inquiries that don't count against you.

My experience goes WAY back with those reporting agencies. Let's just say that when I was denied my first car loan at the age of 21, because I had too much credit out there, did it for me. I had one credit card, with a $7k limit. That I knew of. Turns out, they had cards that belonged to my FATHER on my credit report. One, was a Strawbridge's Department Store card, opened in 1965. I wasn't born until 1968. I actually HAD to prove to them that it wasn't my card. Idiots.
