I love using UserTesting.com for conversion optimization, and we've had great success with it.

Right now (until Nov 15th) they are giving away a free test with the coupon code "4friends2954". While 1 test doesn't give you conclusive results, I can say that the process alone is very informative.

Check it out, if you dare, and learn what people really think when they visit your site.

I checked in with Beth at UserTesting.com, and here's what she said:

The process is the same as if you were paying by any other method; you'll need to fill out the sign up form with your test details, and when you reach the payment page (3rd page) you'll see a box at the top that shows the price of your test(s). There should be a blue link that says "giftcode?" which you'll need to click.
This will bring up a text field and she'll enter the giftcode and then click "apply".
You should see the price update in the box at that point.

There are help bubbles that will pop up when you're filling out the test form. You can click on these for examples of tasks and pointers.
We also have a best practices blog post that you can find by clicking the "blog" tab at the top of the page.

VERY cool, thanks Ryan. I've submitted my request. I'm going to be investing in this I think, what a great way to really understand what people want in a website. I love the fact that you can have your own customers be invited to do the testing and that they can be paid for it. I'm going to have to give this site a more thorough investigation, looks promising!

I got my test back with an hour or two from submitting my request. Very helpful, you will get a video of the actual transaction as the tester goes through your list of tasks, so you see if they fumble around trying to find what you want them to do.

The user makes comments during it, you hear and see what they are doing. Some of the comments were good observations, a few were more geared toward personal preference. She especially did not like all of the white background of my pages with the white background I typically have for my images. I might play with some re-skinning on those but I actually like a really clean look.

Well worth the free pricetag, but I think after I do some tweaking, it would be well worth the $39 for three people to test. Solid investment. Thanks to Beth, whoever you are! :)

Wow! My guy was fantastic. I learned a TON in that 16 minutes. I had some things spot on but am lacking in others. Going to be doing some work tonight that is for sure.
Some of the things I am not sure I have the power to change but we will soon find out hehe watch for that help ticket Ryan I know you can feel it coming!

I know it's just one guy but when he explained it I can see how a user would feel the same. I need to make the cart accessible from every page and so on.

I could even hear him getting annoyed LOL now that is not something I want happening.

I would use this service again and I will in January to see if we are ready for V-day.

Haha ~ I think Ryan is going to regret having shared that with us. The first thing I did after I watched the video was immediately forward it to Strider. I'm afraid Strider is already regretting my taking a bigger interest in my website. I've submitted more tickets in the past two weeks than in the past two years.

The tester sounded annoyed, Lori? Oops, no, not good. I hope he explained thoroughly WHY he felt annoyed.

Regret? Never!! :)

The only thing we ever regret is a florist who does NOT take an interest in their site. In fact (announcement coming soon), in the new year we will no longer be offering sites to florists who do not want to take an interest. If you want a set-it-and-forget it web site there are plenty of $30/month options for you. (Reminds me of the florist a few blocks down from us that didn't change the silks in their window for 20 years. Those sympathy pieces were so bleached from the sun that it was all white.) If you want a bleached, dusty 2nd store front we are not the company for you!

Congrats on getting motivated!

Linda, he added the item to the cart, went to look at something and couldn't find our cart button. It was on the page but it was small so I made some adjustments. A blind man could see it now LOL. Anyway I made the changes I could and asked the team about the rest. We will see what we can do, a few of them were on my list of things to check out but this motivated me to do so.

When I got home Michael watched it with me and between the two of us we came up with even more to change!

I think this weekend I will work on tags and the the like for some of my new pages. So much to do.

I am guessing I am the only one that keeps getting an error message, when I click on the sign up, it basically kicks me out. Going to try from home perhaps, looks like a great investment of time for sure
