Anyone know how long a pomegranate cut in half will last in a design? And which way do you cut it? Is there a better way of securing them (& whole ones) in a design besides wood picks? Sorry for the lame questions, I've just never used them before!
Thanks,
Jenny

I've never used them cut in half (unless I'm eating them). I would imagine they would have to be sealed so they don't bleed all over the place.

I have used fresh pomegranates in arrangements. Have always used cowee sticks 2 stuck in and sealed with waterproof glue so juice didn't bleed all over the place. Never have used them cut open, don't want to be sued for the 2-3 k it cost to replace a rug that the juice got on....

whenever I work with fresh fruits in designs - I don't use wood picks. I go to the grocery store and get the 12 inch wood bamboo food skewers. They have a nice sharp point on the end for impaling the fruit and are long enough to get a good secure hold in the foam material. After I impale the fruit, I drip some pan-glue around the wound and the skewer to seal it.
I know the dyes used in the cowee picks are non-toxic, but the 5 or 7 inch picks are not usually long enough to get a good insertion into the fruit and into the foam.

Besides, I would much rather enjoy the pomegranate in my mouth than dribbling and bleeding all over the surface of a table etc. :)

I too used bamboo food skewers for the same reasons Rick provided.

Well, I decided not to cut any in half. The bouquets are for a fancy-shmancy tour of homes and the last thing I want to do is ruin her sideboard or dining table. I did use the last few skewers I had and sealed the hole with cold glue and then painted the skewer to try to seal the wood a bit. I was really nervous that the juice would bleed down through the wood and cause issues. I will post pix after I deliver them to the house tomorrow. I must say, after 13 years at this, I've never gotten to do anything quite so fancy for anyone. Most customers are low-budget except for funerals and weddings. It was nice to be able to interpret her interior and make whatever I saw fit to go with it! Thanks for the help!

One of the things I miss is decorating for the home tours. I used to love doing that. I'm glad you had the opportunity and I look forward to seeing the pictures. :) Good choice on the pomegranates.

I delivered the bouquets tonight and she just loved them! I've never had anyone praise my talent in such a way. The pix didn't turn out that good because of the lighting, but hopefully you get the idea. The larger one was over 4.5' tall. They were beautiful if I do say so myself! Thanks for your help!
