This year along, two of our FTD Field Service Reps have left FTD (for reasons I do not know). Is this happening elsewhere on the continent? What might be going on?

Yup...only at the Regional VP level here. Rick Davis who WAS with TEL - for years and did a GOOD job fer us...then had some 'issues' with TEL, and was hired by FTD sometime last year. GUESS WHAT! He quit FTD (because of some 'issues' and is now back with TEL.... Flip-floppers....

ANY rep/VP/tech person who does this loses any credibility with me. I have seen all too much of this crap-o-la in my short tenure in the industry. Too much bad-mouthing of the other guy... One rep who was the biggest AFS cheerleader has made the rounds to FTD, TEL, FloralSource, and now...[drum roll....] BLOOMNET! UGH....I need some duct tape...

A phenomenon of the 90's!

Back in the 60's,70's 80's, while I was just a kid growing up in the family's flower shop, there was only "ONE" organization to be associated with. (sidebar I hate ending sentences with prepositions, but I'm tired)

Those reps never job hopped like they do today.

I wonder what went wrong?

Curious Joe

MAN you said it Joe!

When I was a kid, and to this day, I remember our old FTD 3-b rep, Ron West. He was around for YEARS - 20 or so??? My brothers (who are NOT in the biz, and making 5x what I make....) always thought HE was the "Mercury Man" because he wore a gold sport jacket - remember those? How about the Mercury base ball cap! With the gold wings.... still have one around here somewhere. We used to (oh boy is THIS going back) run around the 3-b convention with these hats on, pretending we were flying! There was a bunch of us kids...I think now, that I am the only one left in the biz. Others have either gone out of business, family sold the shops, or moved on.

Here's another walk down FTD memory lane...

An article about the passing of Rex O'Meara at the age of 86. Funny, funny, man that represented FTD on the design circuit for a whole lot of years.
O'Meara's love of a good joke was well-known in West Hartford. Courant columnist Ken Cruickshank wrote in 1976 of a practical joke O'Meara once played on local police. O'Meara dragged a friend who had passed out from too many martinis onto a Ridgewood Road lawn, strapped a parachute to his back, and called local police, telling them "something fell out" of an airplane "and it landed on a lawn near my house."
Needless to say, the old FTD gang was quite colorful.

Sad

Juliana Cancilla

She was a sweetie..........knew the biz......knew the florists side of things. Left the Northeast District 1A&B to go to the great Midwest somewhere.
Juliana.......we loved you and there was no one like you since!!
BTW, glad I didn't take the offer of FSR those many years ago. I'd have shot a few people between then and now.

It was PEOPLE like Ron West, Doug Parks and the others mentioned here that truly added value to FTD.

FTD in the good ole days did more for our industry mainly due to its member owners, that were not only loyal to an organization that they helped build, but an industry driven by merchants with ethics.

Those were the good days! Those were the good times! When we worked together to bring respect and trust to our trade.

The question is, are those days gone forever?

Look at us we are reminiscing about the good old days of the "FTD Family"

It is too bad that the people who run FTD today are too young to remember or have not lived the history of that organization. Additionally, it is equally painful to see them not appreciate and realize the strength and fierce loyalty they once had in their member shops.

Rob:

Wow what a coincidence. You and I were typing the same theme in our last posts without each one knowing what the other was composing!

I don't think so compadre', I think they simply took some time off, and are on the return with a vengence thing....

No vengence !!!

Doesn't have to be vengence at all !!! Just some good hard working florists with a mission not a vendetta...

Did not mean to suggest a "vendetta" thing, more so a powerful movement with direction and thought...

Vendetta's are a waste of time and cloud folks judgement, every Real Florist has to decide what is best for their biz, and work to accomplish the goals they set out for themselves. Positive thoughts generate positive results!

Besides... "with a vengenance" is just an old saying. :)

Jobs change, people change, requirements to survive change.

There was a time when one or two jobs on a resume meant stability... now, not so much. Everyone out there is told to diversify. The more jobs one has, the more transferrable skills one adds to their repetoire.

As far as the Field Reps are concerned, I'm thinking their employers don't offer much in a stable environment. TF and FTD seem to be in a constant state of flux. That wouldn't do much for my morale.

Also, most jobs seem to be a stepping stone to a different goal. We've discussed, in other threads, the lack of loyalty in customers. Seems to be a raging human condition.

Often, it seems, loyalty isn't reciprocated... one can be loyal to an employer, but should have no expectations that will be given back. So, it's off to a position with more money or chances to advance or whatever the personal criteria.
