WHAT WE THINK YOU MEAN...

Posted by Enmasseflowers at 10:34 AM
I've been thinking of this for a while now. What does a bride mean when she starts explaining what she wants for her wedding flowers? Most of the time I can figure out who she really is after a bit of discussion. Remembering that in a perfect world the bride will only get married once and has no technical knowledge of terminology is something I always keep in mind. And of course there are only so many terms and words to throw around.
Please keep your sense of humor intact here. Because today, JUST FOR FUN, I wanted to make a tongue-in-cheek list of what we sometimes think is being said:

"SIMPLE" means "I have no budget"

"ELEGANT" means "can you make it LOOK like I have a budget"

"MODERN" means "I like gerber daisies"

"CHIC" means "I love callas"

"ROMANTIC" means "I like roses and Martha Stewart"

"UNIQUE" means "I've never done this before, and anything you do will be new to me"

"GREEN" means "I will bring 150 people to your area no matter what the footprint and then buy local flowers to fix it"

"FUN" means "maybe you can REALLY try out your new ideas on me and I'll love it - but I'm a little bit of a control freak"

"I WANT TO DO SOMETHING DIFFERENT" means "It'll be like everyone else's idea of different"

"THIS IS THE LAST THING (FLOWERS) I HAVE TO DO" means "you're the last cookie inthe jar and I have no money left. Help me"

"I TRUST YOU" means "I've seen your work and don't want to second guess your abilities" - my favorite bride!

yep, My first wedding consultation at my new flower shop gig was yesterday. Bride and Groom both came in They say to "We trust your judgement, do what you do."
Sweet!

Funny and true! You might enjoy this too: Dumb questions, smart answers

If you’re like most florists, you probably get your share of crazy questions and requests throughout the year. Most are innocently intended, but they can try your patience nonetheless. It may help to have the right answer at the ready, so you won’t fire off the one that first comes to mind.

Will it be fresh?”
What you want to say:

Nope, we’re saving the fresh flowers for tomorrow’s customers.
What you should say:

You know, many of our customers comment on how fresh and long-lasting our flowers are, and that’s because we not only buy them fresh but also give them special care and handling here in the shop. We stand behind all orders with a 100 percent guarantee.

“Will that be pretty?”
What you want to say:

Well, pretty usually costs $10 to $15 more than you’re spending.
What you should say:

It certainly will be. We take great pride in the quality and expertise of our design staff. All our designers can create beautiful floral arrangements in any style or color scheme.

“Can I wait while you make the arrangement?”
What you want to say:

Well, it’s Friday and it’s already 5 pm, there are four people in line behind you, we are short handed and closing in an hour, you want a huge $100 arrangement. Sure, we can do it while you wait, as long as you don’t mind waiting here until tomorrow.
What you should say:

If we weren’t so busy, I’d love to, but I just couldn’t have all the other customers wait while I created an arrangement for you on-the-spot. Perhaps there’s an arrangement in the cooler that I could add some roses or other flowers to while you wait. How about this design?
Or: I would love to help you as soon as I am free. Perhaps it would be easier for you to stop back in about an hour or so. Do you have any other shopping to do? Or perhaps could we deliver it on our way home tonight?

“Can you bill me?” (from a phone customer with no credit card or house charge account.)
What you want to say:

Sure, I’ll extend credit to a total stranger on the phone. That’s the kind of smart business move that will ensure my success!
What you should say:

Once you have an account, we will certainly bill you. I can take any major credit card for today’s order and we can open an account for your next order. Do you have a few minutes? I’ll take your application right now.

“Can you do any better on that price? Is it really $40?”
What you want to say:

Well, what do you think it’s worth? $30? Do I hear $35?
What you should say:

Our arrangements are all priced based on the market price for the flowers. But if you feel the price is too high, we have a beautiful smaller arrangement that might fit your budget.

“Can you deliver this first thing in the morning?”
What you want to say:

Well, that depends. Is the recipient a late sleeper? Does “first thing” mean noon to you?
What you should say:

Yes. We open at 10:00 and usually make our first delivery about 11:00. I hope that will be early enough. Do you know if the recipient will be home in the morning? Or would it be easier to deliver to their place of business? Or: We’ll try to deliver it in the morning, but we cannot guarantee that. If it’s urgent that the delivery be made very early or at a specific time, we use a delivery service that guarantees delivery within a 15-minute time frame. They can pick it up tonight and have it there anytime. It is an exceptional service for only an additional $20.

“I want to have these flowers [in the customer’s hand in New York] delivered—to Utah.”
What you want to say:

That arrangement from our cooler? You want it delivered to Utah? Sure, I’ll do it personally. There’s a modest $500 delivery charge—plus expenses.
What you should say:

It’s a lovely arrangement, and I’m sure the florist in Utah will be able to create something very similar. If the florist doesn’t have the exact container and flowers, we can ask her to create a wonderful arrangement with similar flowers.

“I want to spend $25. Will it be big and showy?”
What you want to say:

Well of course, and for only $5 more, I’ll give you a key to the store and you can come in and take anything else you want.
What you should say:

I wish I could say that it would be, but $25 is not one of our larger, showy arrangements. If you look in the cooler for a moment, you can get a good idea of the relative sizes and price ranges of our arrangements.
If you would prefer to spend $25, you might want to purchase cut flowers. We can wrap them nicely in cellophane or paper and you’ll save the design fee and container cost. That way, you will receive more flowers for the same amount of money.

Whatever wild questions come your way, try to see the humorous side while still providing your usual top-notch service!

I love when the cooler is full to the brim with the best selection of cuts you've had in ages and someone says, "Is this all you have? " What I want to say...
No when I saw you coming I hid the good stuff out back!
What I do say: Is there a particular flower you're looking for?
