Ball, the company that makes canning jars etc, has seen a 30% increase in sales recently...

Burpee, the countries oldest seed company, says, $100.00 in seeds results in $2500.00 savings in groceries when you garden yourself...

Gardening, is the biggest old trend made new again....

And digging in the dirt is good for the soul.

and my 4 little tomato plants produced more tomatoes than we can eat. Wish I still had my big garden....

I would love to have a veggie patch but between my husband scowling at me messing his borders with leeks and potatoes and the basset hounds, i really dont think i would be able to.

OVer here there is a massive waiting list for allotments, seems its everywhere and is the new rock and roll. Me and hubby have loved gardening now for years now, i wonder are we ahead of the times..;)

I couldn't survive without my garden. I'm more of a back set gardener. I
point out what needs doing and my capable other half does it.
Next year I'm going to get somecontainers to put some salag crops in etc. I planted up loads of stuff this year but things went pear shaped as work went made and I never got aroung to pricing out and thing then everything bolted or rotted. So next year I am going to try to do it correctly.

In my neck of the woods (10 miles from downtown Pittsburgh) the deer eat EVERYTHING. Years ago I got fed up when I watched deer from the small herd that regularly visits my yard jumping over the 6 ft. high fence I placed around the garden. I now have a small plot right next to the house where I'm growing tomatoes, broccoli, swiss chard, zucchini, cucumbers and some herbs. I'm going to try and enlarge it by a few feet for next summer. Wish I could do more.

I had a deer issue and solved it with a fence made from fishing line. I staked out the borders and strung 10# test line - clear- all the way around the garden. The fence was about 5' tall and I did line about every 12" up the pole. Because the deer can't see the line they would walk into it and it would scare them away. Only one place did they figure it out and then they would reach in to nibble. So then I took another pole and stretched out the fence a little farther,
moving the boundary and that solved that problem.

This year no deer problems I planted the goodies - lettuce, beets etc in the middle of the gardens and left the ickies at the border - potatoes, squash etc. I was prepared to re fence but didn't need it this year. YES>>>

However the gardening weather this year was not too great. Cool crops swiss chard, lettuce etc are loving it. Warmer stuff - peppers not so good. Will not have a crop of chilies this year at all. :(

Gardening got a huge boost also when Michelle Obama and school children planted and care for a Victory Garden at the Whitehouse.

My Grandpa had the same problem. He went to the local barber and had him save the hair... he made a ring of hair around the garden... walla... no pests ;)

Very interesting. Why would hair keep the animals away?

Well around here...Me pee around the garden so the animals won't go near. Supposedly, they do not like the human scent of urine.

Now don't go picturing grown men in the neighbors yard with their pants down. They do it at night...their last pee of the day.

My garden contains, 5 kinds of tomatoes, 4 kinds of peppers, red onion, large white onion, zucchini, butternut squash, acorn squash, watermelon, cantlelope, asparagus, 3 types of lettuce, broccoli, 2 kinds cucumbers, red, yukon and white potataoes, peas, green beans, garlic, and chives.

What started out as a little hobby has turned into a full time job.

Oh...and my garden is 20 minutes away so, no my husband and my son are not dropping their draws.

Joan

Using human hair is the same as using urine.......the deer/animals sense of smell is far more sensitive than our human noses and they will pick up the scent of man from the hair/urine and stay away.

A hairy flower garden keeps little bunnies from your flowers too.

Well Joan, sounds like you are! Too funny! "Me pee"

Yep, bought 252 jars today.

We totally didn't have enough last year. (jars I mean)

BTW-
To the peeps who think I forgot about sending then some of my jelly.... I didn't forget, life just got away from me. I will send some of the new batch this year. I still have all of your names!

we have a fairly large garden with tomatoes and peppers. i don't have time to can, but i bring all my extras to the store and give it away to all my walk in customers. just a cheap way for a little pr.

I miss my garden. But I do have a pot of basil on my balcony. Even with a northern exposure it grew very well. This morning I made an omlette with a scattering of fresh basil... memories evoked will make my day a happier place.
