Well, today is the big day. My husband has gone in for gastric bypass surgery. It has been a very long and arduous decision for him. He is about 250 lbs overweight and at 37 years old it has started to affect his life. We have both had weight problems since childhood and have battled it with very poor and fleeting results. This surgery is a last chance life changing effort in this battle. I am patiently sitting here waiting to hear from the surgeon that everything has gone well. I should know by 3-4 pm as long as everything goes as planned.

I too will be going for the surgery as soon as I can afford to pay someone to run my business for two week and then pay them to help me for 2 more weeks. I am hoping to save enough money to have this done by july...

Lori, I'm sending good wishes and prayers his way. My sister had the same surgery in August after a lifelong struggle with her weight. She now looks remarkable, has 50% more energy and is never hungry. The best part is that now she knows she's going to be here and healthy to watch her 2 yr old son grow up.

Thanksgiving was different, most of my family's desserts are full of sugar but I made two of her favorites as sugar free and they didn't taste all that much different! After a few bites of each, she was full. (Plus, one sister is a vegan, one niece a vegetarian and two nieces on Weight Watchers...it's getting crazy...)

I'm the tall skinny one sister, she's the curvy one and the other sisters are in between. I don't think I truly understood how her life had been impacted by her weight until she had this surgery. I am so proud of her and I'm glad she'll be around and healthy for a long time.

Thanks for all the well wishes.

Just heard from the surgeon. All went well, they were able to do the procedure laproscopically(yeah!!!) instead of open....Now let the healing begin. Hopefully no leaks and he will be golden and melting away in no time....

Lori,
Sending more wishes for an easy recovery - it certainly will be a tremendous change for you both.
My mother-in-law had this surgery last year, to date has lost 150+ pounds. She feels much better. Some things are still a struggle for her, so I'm sure having your support will make those struggles easier for your hubby.

best wishes, always!

Good luck to your husband and good thoughts for you to as you BOTH start out on this new journey.

Good Wishes to you!!

Hey you need someone to cover let me know, we can send a princess or myself can come and help out, just have the coffee pot on and we can help...

PS All the best to you....and yours..

Lori... best wishes for a slow and steady successful weight loss for you and your husband. Hopefully there is a follow-up programme to deal with the emotional issues that relate to the eating habits that have lead to this surgery.

I do wish I were closer to help you... of course there is vacation time in the summer. Let me ponder this.

Yes, V, there are many, many group meetings before and after for as long as you feel you need them. It is supposedlt one of the best programs in the country...

Lori,
Best Wishes for a speedy recovery for your husband and much support for you both. This is truly a life changing experiance. I have 2 friends who have gone through it, one lost over 100 lbs. The other I went to a couple of the support group meetings with before the surgery. What an amazing procedure!
Hugs,
Lorrie

Prayers and best wishes for each of you, Lori.

Day #2 and he is up walking around to relieve gas. Not using the pain meds(has only used 3 doses on the pump). He is a trooper. He feels fine and is bored at the hospital. Wounds look good, draining well so far no complications. If all goes well today, he will be coming home tomorrow. He will also get his first "meals" today. A meal for the next month will consist of 2-4oz of protein shakes, liquified veggies and fruits, baby food and carnation instant breakfast....several times per day..

Hey Lori, I have been busy so I am way behind as usual, you and hubby are in my thoughts and prayers!!! I wish you both much success and if I were closer I would come help you out with your shop!!! Best of wishes!!!

Lori,

How is your husband doing? Recovering steadily, I hope.

I'm scheduled for the surgery myself, February 15. I'm excited and terrified!

Prayers for you and your husband, and a few for myself as well...

Linda

Well, tomorrow is 1 week post surgery. He is still on a blended diet but we are blending chili, meatballs with sauce, breakfast sausage and eggs, etc. He is up and around and bored out of his tree(good sign of doing well). He can't wait to go back to work. He feels no different except that he is not ever hungry. He eats because he has to to get in his protein. He did have the laporoscopic surgery and not open, so recovery is a peice of cake. he hasn't taken a pain pill since the gas from surgery has dissipated. He has already lost 15lbs since day of surgery and hasn't had one hunger pang. He has not had anything dissagree with him and no dumping or vomitting. Just eating to nourish the body for the first time ever...

Good luck with your surgery. Is there anyone that can pop on to your screenname and tell us how you have done?? I would really love to know how you made out and how your doing once you get home. I am going to be shooting for march or June or July whenever I have the cash to pay someone to run my business for a few weeks...

Lori,

Thanks for sharing your husband's experience. It sounds like he is doing wonderfully. It's very encouraging to read, especially the part about pain not being much of an issue.

My doc said it will be worse than my gall bladder surgery, but not as bad as the two c-sections. So that gives me an idea of what I'm in for.

I'll try to have my assistant leave a post, if she gets a chance. For now, its two months, and counting.

Best regards,
Linda
