Under the new system, individuals, companies or groups could apply to have any string of letters established as a domain name. It could be a vanity name, for example -- .smith -- or a category name like .sports or .perfume. A company could also change its domain to reflect its brand, so Apple.com could become Apple.mac, for instance.

Anyone think we can get $100,000 together to own the .florist TLD?

Maybe it would be better to ask, "How many real florists would throw in
a hundred bucks?" I have no problem with a hundred or more up front. Or would it be a $100 a year for the rest of my life??? That's a different story that would require a little more thought and a lot of questions first.

Guys - the real $$$ would be in .flowers.

I saw this news today and just hate the idea. It's gonna be a trademark nightmare. Are we gonna have to register our company names (like .avantegardens) to keep some affiliate from domain squatting?

Every city and state name will probably turn into a battle, too.

I can't see it ever being better than a good old dotcom

Never say never tho.....

I don't think it works like that. I think each TLD would need to be approved, and at $100K an application, it wouldn't be too feasible to register cities or individual businesses. But, a TLD like .florist, or .flowers would have a decent return. Think about .cars, .pets, .wine, etc.
