Is there any way to get the small green mini hydrangea to open quickly? I got them in today and 1/2 of my order was damaged by Fed-Ex and Flowerbuyer is overnighting new ones but I will need to get them to open really quickly in order to be able to use them for the wedding this weekend.

Cut them as short as you can, in hot hot water - as hot as you can touch. Do not refrigerate at all. You can also put the entire bucket/vase in another bucket of hot hot water, kind of like a steam bath. It worked for us last week for roses, overnight.

Any access to stock flowers? They're a pretty good sub if you need to - pinch off the green bud tops and they're a pretty blossomy lookalike.......

good luck,
tracy

Get them in and use hot water.

The chances of them getting bigger is slim.

As a grower of hydrangeas, I have never seen how the flower/chime expansion can be spend up. Sunny location v Shady location definitely impacts the longetivity of the flower, with a shady location prolonging flower color.

What she said, then take a plastic garbage bag and place it loosely over top of flowers (as to not damage blooms) and pull it down around sides of bucket then tie with with string to prevent steam from escaping at bottom.

Thanks everyone! I knew I could count on you guys. They just came in and are sitting in buckets of hot water with the plastic bags over them. Now the waiting begins.....:bouncy:
I hope it works quickly because I still have to design everything.

did this work for you

just wondering how the hydrangeas turned out... i never heard to put them in hot hot water before... had some left from a wedding yesterday... i might have to experiment some...

I did just as everyone said and I think it did help open them up a little. I did have some that turned brown so I wasn't sure if I kept them in too long or had the water too hot. Oh well, the bride loved them and that's what counts.

Time is important. The hot water did not cause the brown edges

I have heard to place the heads in water for about 15-20 minutes then place them in hot water and recut and place in regular temp. water. It makes them last longer.
