Alana called from Nica last night apparently using Skype. She advised me to get it. Ok, alright, I'll get right on that... but first... How?

So, the first place I thought of to get answers was here. Any info will be appreciated.

Thanks Erlene... I had already been there, but I really want more info. The site doesn't really educate me on the how to stuff. :) I would rather hear/see it from people who actually use it.

Ah, that wasn't clear to me from your initial post. Can't help you there, don't use it.

Hi Victoria

I use skype and video chat to my parents, you know in Union, all the time, every couple of days, it is absolutely free!!!!!!!!!!!
Free live video chatting from NZ to Can, too cool for the grandparents.
Now if you don't have a webcam, you can use voice only, also free, no long distance charges from computer to computer, some people use a headset, I used to with my old mac but got a new one now so no need, all built in.
A friend of mine in Kingston uses a skype phone, just like a handset.
The other neat thing is my dad calls landlines in Holland with it too, from his computer, some family don't have computers and it is a fraction of what ma bell charges.
Can test your skype if you want, just pm and I will send you my skype name.
Hope this helps.

Thanks Franca... that's the kind of info I need. I have friends who know of it but don't use it.

I have many questions, most of which may seem pretty rudimentry... for example, do I use my regular phone?

Also, thanks for your reply Erlene... sorry my initial post wasn't clear.

Hi Victoria

IA friend of mine in Kingston uses a skype phone, just like a handset.

.

When Alana called she mentioned a ridiculously low price for the call. She was calling from a computer there to my land line. And it was crystal clear, but the way. :)

My dad calls from his computer to mine or vice versa, that is free.
or from his computer to land lines in holland, soooo cheap.
All you need to do is download skype, and then you just let Alana know what your skype name is and she can call you directly on your computer when you are online and then it won't cost her anything. But the cost is so ridiculously low the way she did it.
Use the built in audio stuff in your computer to talk etc or use a head set, with a webcam etc. if they are not built in. I hope I am explaining myself enough. It becomes quite self-explanatory once you download the skype.

Victoria, sorry I am not explaining properly.
calls are generally from computer to computer, with built in or external audio stuff, (I am a techno peasant)
You can call computer to landline, which is what Alana did and only cost her a few cents.
It will be free for her to call computer to computer but you have to download skype and be online to receive a call, and then you can talk for hours.
Next step is the webcam/videochatting which you can do with a webcam.
My friend in Kingston plugs this skypephone into the computer and uses it like a handset, it is a special phone specifically for this, not a regular handset.
