Hi Folks,

I think this is a good thing. Good for the industry. My question is who pays for the flowers? Does the wholesalers give the flowers to the Florists? This was something I was never too clear on.

Canadiana Flowers plans to give away 15,000 free flowers for FTD(R) Good Neighbour Day(R)

TORONTO, Aug. 31 /CNW/ - On Wednesday, September 3rd, 2003 residents of
Toronto will have the unique opportunity to meet each other and develop new
friendships when Canadiana Flowers hosts the annual FTD(R) Good Neighbour
Day(R) event. Beginning 9:00am, Canadiana will give away 15,000 roses in
bunches of a dozen, absolutely FREE to anyone who visits the Eglinton Square
Shopping Centre location, while supplies last.
There is one catch, however Stephen & Chris Mangos, the owners of
Canadiana Flowers hope the goodwill is exactly that - "catching". Anyone who
picks up a dozen free flowers will be asked to sign a promise to keep one of
the flowers for themselves and give the others away to 11 different people -
spreading goodwill and friendship in the community.
"We hope that the people of Toronto will be able to get acquainted with
new people or will renew an old friendship during FTD(R) Good Neighbour
Day(R)," states Chris Mangos. "We hope to help create a friendlier, more
caring and compassionate world, starting right here in Toronto." "Torontonians
have been through quite a lot these past few months and we want to just say
'Thanks Toronto' for hanging in".
FTD(R) Good Neighbour Day(R) is being celebrated for the tenth year
throughout the United States and Canada at participating FTD(R) floral shops
as a day of celebrating goodwill toward all people. It is expected that
thousands of FTD(R) Florists in North America will participate in this year's
FTD(R) Good Neighbour Day(R) event, giving away millions of free flowers.

Its....

The florists that pay Peter....

Some wholesalers and FTD fresh flowers offer product at special prices...

It "should" be chalked up to the advertising budget...

I done it one year and it is a good promotion. Lots of positive feedback and it made lots of people happy that day.

Here's how we do it........

Line up some co-sponsors, this year we have 4 paying us a total of $1400.00 plus a printer that prints 100 posters, care cards (for each dozen), and labels (which we supply) for each rose at NC.

We get a signature from the mayor officially proclaiming GND in the Community.

We place and ad in 2 local weekly papers, and also the Mayors proclomation (we also pay for that).....**** news papers won't give an inch on that!!!!!! but they do print a press release that we send in.

Our driver places posters in shops, offices, hospital, post office......(anywhere they would let us put one up)

We put a printed label around every rose and sleeve them in bunches of 12 (the label says GND and the sponsors names)

Bought 2000 roses from flowerbuyer.com 40 & 50 cm at 28 - 29 cents each (including shipping to our store)

We also collect food for the local food bank....

So when all is said and done the cash outlay is $00.00 (just a fair bit of of work) but it's a great promotion!!!!! :)

Yes it's a incredible promotion and I figured shops or sponsors paid. Hopefully the industry gets lots of postive press, and get as much coverage as some of that negative press we see at Hoilday times. :))

Great Job Folks!!!!

Looks like Good Neighbour Day has been a great success today. :)

Caught some headlines today Canadiana in Toronto had a great turn out, and Jeans Flowers in Hamilton , Ontario had success also.

I'll PASS!

Where is the BACK BONE to this????????

Oh the BACK BONE of US!@^%*&*((

Not ONE Wholesaler offered a DISCOUNT! and I should just EAT IT?
FAT CHANCE! and I'm not FAT ANYMORE!!!65 lbs GONE!.

One thing I've never heard in responce to good neighbor day is if anyone can account for "new" customers as a result? I always hear about how the day went, but little about how tomorrow was, or the day after ect...

Everyone loves something for free. But are they willing to come back later and pay.

I believe it does create new customers or at least helps retains them as they see the shop doing something postive. In the Toronto Star yesterday (a national newspaper in Canada) it was the Front page news about GND) and then had more coverage of some of the people who got part of the other 11 roses. Cant' buy that kind of media coverage and it's way better than the negative junk we see some media outlets push at hoilday time. :)
