I started my floral business in December of 2008
I am currently taking classes at The Floral Design Institute in Seattle
I found FlowerChat via an internet search
I hope to learn more about the industry and also exchange ideas
I hope to contribute in the area of idea exchange

Carriann, just means that someone used the scale to submit an approve/disapprove instead of posting to the thread.

Gwen, can you tell us a little bit more about you? Did you work for other florists before your business? I'm also an FDI graduate. Hoping to go this summer for more courses.

I second Aileen's question. Also, do you hope to someday open a retail shop, or continue to work from home? In your home, do you have a flower cooler? Also, are you licensed (wit hthe state/town) and do you collect/pay sales tax?

Please understand the reason for all questions is that this is a forum for professional florists. There are many hobbiests posing as florists(not that you are one of them!!), and in this economy they pose a threat to many local businesses. Getting to know you better will help the members vote you in. Thanks!!!

I am licensed and I do pay sales tax. I live in a very rural area. There are more floral designers who design out of their home studios than who operate out of a retail shop here. Most of us have large pieces of property with the space to do so and most of us grow some of the flowers/greens we use.

Yes, events - weddings, memorials, holidays, parties, as well as prom flowers. I also do workshops. For instance, for the past 4 or 5 years I've run wreath-making workshops where participants come and make fresh wreaths with my help. I provide all the materials and the choose which greens to use, any ornaments they may want to add on, ribbon, etc. This year I'm planning to do a spring workshop as well. I've found that you can really make connections with customers who will then remember you when they need flowers for an event or occasion.

Unfortunately there is little in the way of corporate work here. We are a very small community on an island. We do have a 'golf and country club' that gets flowers periodically (again, from a home studio designer), but that's the only one I know of. In fact, once the economy starts looking up, I may try and interest some of the local businesses in using my services. But we really don't have places like law firms and big salons that you'd find in cities and more suburban types of areas.

I did consider a retail shop and I guess if the right situation arose, I would consider it again. But to be honest, all the floral designers in my area that I most admire do exactly what I'm doing. And I love being at home, being able to stroll through the garden (I was a gardener long before I decided to get serious about floral design) and pick that yellow phlomis that just came into bloom to work into a design.

I personally believe there are many ways to go about one thing, that variety is the spice of life, and that there's room for all of us. I am extremely fortunate enough to live in a community that encourages small creative business and where 'the competition' is often out there giving classes to encourage new people to open their own business!

Welcome to the community Gwen and I too thank you for your candor. Please enjoy the site (when you're a registered member) and participate fully.

Full-time. My kids are almost grown and out. My youngest son is 17 and is a junior in high school. Our oldest son will be 21 in April and our middle son is 18. They both attend Pacific University in Forest Grove, Oregon.

Twiggy, I have blocked it all out and gotten together all the photos, etc. I'm hoping to have my oldest son's best friend do it. He does web designs (www.ryanscottdesigns.com) but is backed up at the moment. I have two or three other friends that do websites, so will be contacting them later today. If you know of anyone who does web design, I'd love to get their contact info. I have the feeling I'm going to have to 'get in line' with most web designers.

I wish I was on an island!!! Welcome to Flowerchat! Looking forward to reading your posts!!!

Pat, living on an island is quite idyllic. Unless you want to earn any kind of serious money. The town I live in is an art-oriented tourist town. Many of the full-time residents are retired. There are some quite well-to-do people but they don't seem to spend a lot of money other than eating out and going to the theater. People move here to become reclusive. There is surprisingly little in-home entertaining. (Thus no need to order a lovely centerpiece to go on the table for a dinner party.)

Lots of hippies and people who are seriously into the 'green' movement. Which is great but they don't have a lot of need for a florist.

The good part is it's very pretty here and people come here to get married.

There's a naval air force base on the north end of the island (one hour away) that is much more heavily populated. I hope to break into that market because it's much more of a suburban mindset. So that's one of my immediate goals.
