I know it's a bit late for this year-but all the advise you can give for next year will be greatly appreciated, here in UK we are fast ditching "Halloween" and the kids seem "Trick or treat"crazy. Now my question is how do you USA/Canadian folk deal with this healthy kids no sweets(candy)politically correct brigade? What do you offer as an alternative? and also what is an acceptable trick...? I only ask as last night several parents and loads of kids went out trick or treating and not one trick was played on us(as we dont know or are to scared to inflict some harmless trick on a child for fear of our nanny state saying thats out of order)all parents commented "my child is going to be sick, if they eat the bag bulging with nothing but sweets(candy)"is there nothing healthier yet still acceptable to give to a child..?
ANY SUGGESTIONS OR HELP WITH THESE TWO THORNY ISSUES WOULD BE GREAT.........

Crayons . . . .

My wife found some nice Crayolas, 16 in the box I think. She got a good deal on them.

I was worried that the kids would revolt and trick us for not giving a "treat".

I was AMAZED at the response. Kids were ecstatic.
"All Right, Crayons. I need these for school".
"Hey, Mom, we got Crayons!".
"Thank you, thank you, thank you".
Mom: (from the street), "Great Idea, they need those".
As they were making their way back up the street: "We already went to that house, remember they gave the crayons".

My 10 year old exclaimed in horror last night after seeing the array of Halloween sweets I bought "but mum, these sweets have gelatin in them, what do we give the vegetarians as these have pork fat in them?" I was lost for words!!
Last night was the first time I let my 4 year old go out with his brother and friends and he came home with play-doh, crayons, a pumpkin candle, a horrendous amount of sweets and £2.95 in 2p coins. I was so proud he learnt a song at pre-school, sang it loud and proud, came home ate 2 lollies and conked out fast asleep absolutely exhausted.

Crayons, etc good idea.
but.
No one said those kids have to eat ALL those sweets at one or two sittings. The adults in our house took controll of the bag and my kids got a piece or two every day (along with mom and dad - first choice :) ) till it was gone.

that being said. We also didn't trick or treat the whole town. We did a small neighborhood maybe 15 houses in a mile walk, long enough to wear the tykes out and for mom and dad to get some exercise too. Trick or treating ended for our kids at 6th grade.

Oh, and as I was passing out. . . .

crayons.

I was thinking, why didn't I print up some coupons or attach a biz card?

Could have handed out a rose to the moms. duh. . . . The opportunities that are there abound. . . .

some good ideas.

I'm Loving Your Sensible Treat Ideas, keep Em Coming Please...but Would Still Like To Know If Any Tricks Are Actualy Played On The Kids And Are They Seen As Acceptable, cheers Folks.

Am I A Bit Thick Or What!!!!

I've sussed it now...if you dont give the kids a treat they play a trick on me,i did'nt catch on to the "trick or treat thing" being an option that the kids offer me,hence if i dont give them a treat they trick me,i don't play any tricks they do..... got it now...Thanks for clearing it all up for me and thanks also for the treat tips..
