We seem to be getting an inordinate number of hang up calls daily... no body there...

I'm wondering if they are telemarketers with auto-dailers, or if they don't answer when they here it's a business...

anyone else?

We get quite a few of these hangup calls too. A couple of months ago, we were getting quite a few wrong number calls for many businesses around Asheville. They said they got the number from a Google search. In my conspiracy theory mode, I thought it was maybe the print ad people using our "blind number" DTN? trying to raise the statistics that show how many phone calls we get from people using that unique number. I'm sure I'm wrong(or am I...)

We used to get them every day, 5 or 6 times. We thought it was telemarketers, too, but we also figured out it was cell phones not making a connection. Since we've had caller i.d. added to our phone package, though, we haven't gotten as many.

Do you answer with Hello?
I think a lot of them are set to trigger on hello, before they start the automated answers. So if you are answering with a shop name or something different there is no one there.

We're getting several a week.

I think lots of the automated calls trigger on hello, I also say Good morning/good afternoon, and I notice the the dead calls.

we get several every day with the Id of unknown name, unknown number. I think they are autodial telemarketers and we answer too fast and then hang up faster.

and we get several wrong numbers for the bank and a DR office whose numbers are one off of ours. If the numbers on the caller id are local we figure they weren't looking for us. For a while a little old lady would call us every monday morning looking for the Dr office. We caught on to her number quickly

We get a couple a day, at least. We also are one number off for a loan company and for a nearby pharmacy. We hear some sad stories for the first one. For the second, we once had a lady who called our # several times, and finally said, "Ya'll need to get your numbers straightened out up there," before she slammed down the receiver. In the phone directory, we also listed directly below the water company, and we get some frantic, sad calls for that also.

Oops! Rambling and hijacking!

We sometimes find its a faulty cell phone connection. So it's best not to say anything silly or profane....I know it sucks to get interrupted by non-sales calls..but they can sometimes hear you even when you can't hear them. So we encourage our employees to maintain the air of professionality.... could be the next bride (whos not on a budget).

We used to be located in a strip mall.. People would call and ask us to "Go on down to the dog groomers and see what the number is. I ain't got a phone book." ( so how did they get my number??) Sure, got plenty of time to do that!! The calls from telemarketers drive me crazy too. We don't answer with "Hello", so it's a dead call. Yep, got lots of time to deal with that too!!

This time of the year, there's a fair in Reno NV and we get a lot of calls on our toll free number for fair reservation or inquiry. The difference is, ours is an 800 number, the fair's is 866. Our local number is similar to a funeral home, so, I dutifully give the caller the right number to call, and our other number is similar to a health center. With all those wrong numbers, we also get a lot of hang -ups.... really annoying.

On the TV news this morning, they were saying that 911 gets a lot of "ghost" calls during rainy times. It has to do with water build-up on the phone lines. Curious.
