Am closed today, just got back from our parade. One granddaughter in a fire truck, one in a stroller eating lollipops-sticky, purple colored 17 month old. We have been closed since Saturday at 2. Went in Sunday finished up funeral, delivered 25 roses to a lodge for couple's 25th Anniversary (they were driving up from Rhode Island Sunday and wanted flowers in room on arrival), delivered funeral pieces, then took a deep breath and a couple glasses of white zin! Wholesalers both told me that I would probably be the only shop open on their routes if I was open Monday, so I closed. Went to feed the cat at 10:30 a.m. yesterday morning and the main street was completely empty-it was sunny yesterday for the first time in 4 days, everyone was at camp!! Only stores open here are grocery stores, convenience stores, restaurants, and gas stations. Almost every other retail business is closed for the holiday. Would be different if there were activities in our business district. When that was done years ago (actually when I was president of the downtown merchants assn) we were all open with activities such as car shows, entertainment, association barbeques etc and it drew thousands to the downtown area. We sold lots of balloons, few flowers, and some "touristy trinkets" but it was exposure. Now the Chamber puts on a craft fair and that's it. Everything else is out of the business district or at night, so we now take the time off to enjoy with family (or take a nap).
Hope our friends to the north had a great 1st...and all friends south have a safe, happy 4th.
