I was just putting together a square vase for delivery tomorrow and the design is putting curly willow inside the vase. Well our supplier doesn't have curly willow, so I am using grapevine from a swag I have had hanging around (when you gotta get creative, you gotta get creative!) Anyhow while I was inserting the grapevine I got to thinking how it looked like those grapevine balls I use to get and then I had a thought, what if you took one of those grapevine balls, placed it in the square vase, add your preservative and presto, instant twig appearance and instant frog to boot! Wish I had one of those grapevine balls to try it because I think it would work. Has anyone done this and if so, does it work? I know I am going to pick up a grapevine ball and try it, cause those square Martha Stewart arrangements are a pain in the :buttwiggl !!!!!!!!!!!!

Just a thought, what do you think?

Haven't tried it, but a great idea. As long as you can get those little balls pretty cheap. We also use natural birch for the same effect - little cheaper than willow. Soak it in water a bit before twisting and it works great.

good idea!

The colored aluminum wire works great too, you can do it in the same colors as your flowers for a fun look.

I had to do a whole wedding with like that last year. I got some twig roping at AC Moore for 3.95 and used that. I soaked it and then twisted it. Thought of the balls but not cost effective for my application...

Has anyone...

Julz, I would wonder about the cost of the Grapevine orbs. We use weeping willow Branch. Remove the leaves & you have a pliable armature for inside the vase with still a twig effect. Debbie

Several years ago I bought a small twig of curly willow that was still alive, rooted it and planted it just to use for floral work. The tree is now 40 foot tall and a nearly unlimited supply of branches, we use a lot , but it puts out more than we can keep up with. My original goal was to keep it trimmed back so it was a manageable height, I couldn't keep up with it though. I've scrunched it down in the vase to use but haven't wound it into a ball sticking out of the vase, will have to try that.

My other concern regarding grapevine ( beyond the costs for the orbs) would be the posible flaking of the bark. Unless the vine has been stripped of the bark, it does tend to flake and you could have lots of little brown flecks floating in vase.

I believe this technique is called Kubari. Used in Ikebana it means to place sticks in the bottom of the vessel.
I think your grapevine orb is a fabulous idea! It will work but you need to have the budget for it. I really like to use fresh curly willow for this technique because it is so pliable. I also like to use aluminum wire. also if you have the budget Oasis has new wire bouquet collars that work great inside and over glass!
Have fun!

We often line squares with bamboo, liatris, magnolia leaves..anything that creates interest.Recently we bought in a box of "green" limonium..I asked if it was stem dyed and was told that it was a soft sage color but not stem dyed..figured we give it a whirl..well, needless to say it was emerald green...wow, a bit over the top so we used it to line about 6-8 squares going out that Mon to different businesses....by Tuesday we were getting calls about how cool the "look" was but could we please pick it up as it smelled like rotten meat...OMG, when we brought them back to the store to see what the problem was we had to spray the shop....17 years and I have never smelled anything like it....wooohooo...nasty. Just sharing some tidbit to spare you some stink-bit...

4 brides, 25 bridesmaids, and somewhere around 300 floral arrangements/centerpieces for the receptions this weekend and yes, we are improvising a bit.

Part of the improvisation is that these arrangements will include regular swamp willow (cut from one of my designers treese), 8 week old lily grass and some other "select" greens/objects in some 24 inch tall by 4 inch square vases...

Flowers? two simple flowers .... I think it will be a rose and an asiatic lily, but this may change.

I love it when the brides are confused! :)

I use angel vine in bowls and cubes - comes in a large box - thinner than curly willow but much more affordable

I have used the grapevine balls on their own and done arrangements in them but not inside the square vases. I'll have to give it a try. Oh, and Hobby Lobby sells the orbs for $3.47 each and I believe they are 1/2 price this week.

I think it's a cool idea, something to try sometime if you're out of time and need something different and quick. Here's my question for you. I love those square vases for some bouquets, but I am having trouble finding them at a decent price. I have looked at TF's website and they have colored ones that I think are great, but I don't know where to find them. (I am not a TF member) Also, I don't feel like paying 5 to 6 bucks a piece for them. Anyone out there have a supplier where I can get them cheaper? I would appreciate any info.

Um, don't you have any TF friend you could buy from and split? Peel off the sticker on the vase and tada - utility glass.

Good idea. The closest town is only 70 miles away. I'll buzz over and ask. No, really, that's an idea. I'll make a few calls. I am really out in the toolies. Closest Walmart is 120 miles away. (Sometimes that's good!!) But we're isolated here. I do most of my shopping online. I'm also a volunteer EMT. Try having to go 70 miles with a man having a heart attack. I WANT TO MOVE!!!

Thanks, Julene
