I have had upper arm and shoulder pain on the right side for since before Christmas. Hurts alot at night. Hard to sleep. Hard to lift buckets. Tell me what you know. This is killing me.

Last summer I painted my mothers kitchen and the results were a painful upper arm and shoulder- limited range of motion, could not sleep,,, ended up getting x-rays, was just inflamation from over use.. cortezone shot did the trick...
Please get it checked out as you may be doing more damage each day

Well just pop Motrin to ease the pain at night so you can get some rest. Trust me, I know...I must have done something to my left shoulder last Sat. I was moving furniture and boxes around. Thought I just had a knot..well it had to be a pulled muscle. Had this KILLER pain (I don't pain easily) between my shoulder blade and spine. I tried laying down on the floor to just since if that would help....OH BOY!! that was the wrong thing to do-could not move, breathe or think for about a good 5 minutes. Finally was able to get myself up....I popped a few Motrin and slept...it's been helping at night and now it's subsided a LOT!!
So give yourself a rest and just take a bit more pain meds to sleep.

Frozen Shoulder. . . .

A real deal, adhesive capsulitis.

I was sure I had a torn rotator cuff. My boss has had surgery for it and the described symptoms were the same.

Glad my doc was not ready to jump right in to surgery.

Learn more here.

My range of motion is back to normal after about 6 months and the pain subsided after about 4 months.
Now trying to get my strength back.

Wow, I hurt my shoulder last year... it hurt for close to a year. Took a lot of Alleve. I guess I should have had it looked at.

Of note, forget paying extra for the name brand Motrin and buy ibuprofen which is the same thing only a whole lot less. Billed as "walprofen" or similar in many pharmacies.

Secondly, Ibuprofen and Aleve (drug name is Naproxen) are hard on your liver and before taking them for long periods of time you should consult with you doctor (or even better your pharmacist). Both should be taken with food or milk as well.

Other than that I would echo the sentiment of those above, see your doctor.

yes,

I have developed bersitis (not sure how to spell it) in both my shoulders. I also have arthritis.

It got really bad at my last gig to the point I could hardly raise my arms.

Went to the doctor. He said "take some advil, $100 please."

Well, the delivery driver at the shop said to me "Ya know, I bet the table is too tall for you"
I thought, yeah whatever.... and told her I'd just deal with it.

While I was off one day she and the store's owner made my work table about 6" shorter... Well, I'll be darned.....
Had very very little problems after that.

But I do tend to baby my shoulders, hands, arms... Kinda have to in this biz.

It could be anything, have it checked. And also take a look at the height of your design table.

Shoulder pain can come from many sources, it can be adhesive capsulitis as indicated above. It can also be impingement syndrome, tendinitis or bursitis. It can be a torn rotator cuff. It can also be caused by a herniated cerivical disk.

There are a lot of reasons you could be experiencing shoulder pain. Best to be evaluated by a physician sooner rather than later. Your physician will do a series of tests, range of motion, palpation, etc. Perhaps even an MRI.

Your treatment will be determined by the diagnosis, bursitis and tendinitis are treated with physical therapy and other methods that can include anit-inflammatories, ultrasound, cold laser therapy and cortisone injections. Adhesive Capsulitis is often treated with PT as well. If you are told it could be bursitis or tendinitis they will not determine which it really is generally because the treatment is the same for both.

Rotator cuff tears are usually treated differently. If your rotator cuff is torn and you are treated for something else it will aggravate the tear more and cause you increased pain. Rotator cuff tears are often treated surgically.

If you have a herniated cervical disk DTS can help, also known as decompression therapy or traction.

You may also have more than one condition causing the problem. In my case it was a combination of bursitis/impingement syndrome and a herniated cervical disk. The PT for the impingement syndrome/bursitis did not completely help and often made things worse. The DTS helped immensely, actually so much so that I stopped the PT.

Even with PT and DTS treatment I still had a lot of pain for a couple of hours each morning.

On a side note, my good friend Sue Muldoon told me that in the metaphysical world that if your right shoulder hurts you're carrying the weight of the world. The day I made the monumental decision regarding my shop my shoulder stopped hurting and in the last 2.5 weeks has immensly improved. I have nearly no pain at all and pretty much full range of motion........I've never been a big believer in all things metaphysical but this is one thing that made me go hmmmm.... :)

Erlene, Did she say anything about the left shoulder? What that stands for? I'm curious.

Yes but I don't recall what it is now. I'll see if I can get her on the thread to post. She has a whole lot of info on other areas that hurt too.

The left side represents "unconscious" (things that are there that you don't really hear or acknowledge)...which is spirit, or guidance. If the left side hurts you may not be paying attention to your instincts, or listening to your guides.

Right side is conscious...activities that you have control over, and are aware of. They usually are more matters of the physical world as opposed to spirit. Daily doings....

Does that make sense ? Help?

OMGosh Sue...Yes...that REALLY says A LOT! Thank you so much for chiming in.

and a PS...just remember you get sick in spirit first, and then it manifests as a physical symptom. If you associate the body part and what it does it will resonate with what the issue is...here are some examples

If your hands hurt you are either trying to hard to hang on, or won't let go
Lower back...financial issues
Middle back..emotional issues
Feet...moving forward
Knees...being flexible
throat...don't want to talk about something
eyes...can't see the issue
ears...don't want to hear or hear too much
breathing...scared to accept life as it is or can't enjoy it

this is just a quick overview. There are other things that contribute, but this is a thumbnail sketch

Herniated Cervical Disc

If you have a herniated cervical disk DTS can help, also known as decompression therapy or traction.
QUOTE]

I've got a herniated cervical disc....woke up one morning with a "creek" in my neck, went to chiropracter (mistake!), then to the doc who referred me to massage therapy (another mistake!). Finally tried physio - those people are amazing! - and after the consult, determined to treat it as a herniated disc before getting a doc's diagnosis. Glad I started getting that treatment when I did 'cause I couldn't get in for an MRI for four months!

My symptoms: pain in neck, shoulder, all the way down the arm and numbness/tingling to fingertips (thumb to middle finger indicate neck probs). Graduated to "electric shocks". Felt v-e-r-y tired all the time and could practically fall asleep sitting at my computer at work. Eventually had to leave work....and no body position alleviates the pain.

My treatment (that worked): accupuncture, electro treatment and traction (manual traction was used for several months, then eventually to traction bed). Also did specific exercises daily at home, as well as home traction (apparatus that hangs over a door with a water bag and harness - looks hideous but it helps). Thank goodness physio is covered under our basic health care 'cause I needed therapy for close to 2 years on a weekly basis (beginning with three times per week). The only other option was surgery....

I still get traction as needed. And even after my carpal surgery, I'm experiencing numbness in my thumb/fingers which is related to my neck.

Lifting anything - especially incorrectly - is very hard on the neck!!

I've also had bursitis in the past, but there is limited treatment available, as far as I know, because it's an inflammation. Ibruprofen, like someone else said. Physio didn't help me at all for that.

Ya, like everyone said, have it looked at and if a treatment doesn't alleviate the pain at all or it gets worse (like massage therapy did to me!) after 2-3 weeks, go back to the doc!

I hope it's nothing serious. Pain sucks so much energy out of you.

It was my chiropractor that picked up on the fact that it was a herniated cervical disk and the DTS therapy is at his office.

I have the same thing in my right shoulder but a tiny way down my arm...I dont have any serious pain (TG) just nagging every once and a while but this is interesting...I also have Carpal Tunnel in both hands....

Thanks so much to all of you. I never thought that so many of you would respond. When I read the thread about non-floral related threads, I was worried that maybe they were talking about me!! Oh my!! Paranoid?

Erlene, the weight of the world is really interesting, because, I, like you, have been doing alot of thinking about what is best for me and my business. My arm pain started at about the same time I started feeling the stress of increased rent, fewer funerals, cut back weddings, etc. You sound like everything is going well. Good for you. Karen
