Gonna lose some brownie points on this one.

Realized this morning that, over the years, I've never actually put a glad into oasis at ANY point. Have a wedding this weekend where I have to.

Anything to keep in mind? I don't do a lot with Oasis.. kinda dreading aiming those huge fat stems at foam, ya know? Doesn't sound like a smart idea, but obviously it's done all the time .. I don't do funerals though!

Any tips?

Soak the Oasis first. :squish:

Bloomz is so wise.....

Wink, treat it like any flower, just be careful not to insert too many glads really close to each other because your Oasis block may crack apart.

Other than that knock your self out!

Thanks Joe. Wasn't sure if there was anything special I had to do with superthick stems like that. "Cut a steeper angle then normal" kinda thing, ya know?

Glad (haha) to hear it's just regular common sense then!

Have to say that on this side of the puddle the recommendation is that on heavier stems you should cut them at a sharp angle both sides (like an arrow head) as not only does this allow good water uptake but stops the stem swivelling/breaking up in the foam.

nobody has come out with the chicken wire yet??
Depending on the design, chicken wire over the oasis may help from movement and breaking up of the oasis - or criss-cross method of oasis tape works if you get a good seal with the tape on the sides of the container.

Hi Wink!
No question is dumb!

When I am using glads or large stemmed flowers in oasis I usually will start with those flowers first in the design, even before any greenery. this will establish a good line. Try to watch your insertions, you do not want to be inserting the large stems, pulling them out and reinserting them. i also cut the bottom of the stems in an arrow shape.
I hope this helps!

Your not alone

Many years since I have done this as well, so dear you are not alone, Thanks for the memory of the chicken wire, just heard today, "Why dont' we wrap all our oasis in foil: I almost had a stroke do folks do that now, I have seen some shops do this instead of using a container for head tables, can't even get me start on that one...

I tape the oasis if I'm using a lot of glads (not my favorite flower). Also go deep into the oasis if your moving the arrangment, all that movment will loosen the stems in the oasis.

When we have large stems to insert into foam, we tape Cowee sticks to the cut end, after the end has been cut at a sharp angle. The wooden sticks swell, preventing the stems from turning or moving or whatever--holds the stem more securely. We also use Ludwig Wet Foam instead of any of the Oasis foams.

Glads

Bloomz,

HA Bloomz & Lori, I needed a good crack up this morning!!! Excuse the pun!

But seriously, I would agree to cut the glad like a spear on both sides, just as I do on a candle being placed in oasis. Keeps it from swiveling. Have a great day all. Debbie
