I have a customer that came in EARLY to see if we can get more unusual flowers for his Mom for Mother's Day. Anyone know if you have seen either black tulips or Heliobore being sold as cut flowers, how hard would it be to get and how expensive? I haven't started calling wholesalers yet, since there's a large demographic of posters here, I thought this would be a better place to start and I would maybe have a clue before I approached our local suppliers. Since the Heliobore is similar to anemone, how does it do in an oasis design?

On a different note, my second grandchild was born this last week, a beautiful baby girl.

Trish,
Congratulations on the grandbaby!

I used hellebore in a class we held at the shop. Some of the students reported that their flowers were gone quickly while the others in the design were still going strong. Mine at the shop were fine, but still in the cooler (designed and loose). These were in foam.

On the other hand, we have an arrangement with anenomes in foam that sat out in the shop all week and they did just fine. I would say that they are one of those sketchy flowers in foam, sometimes great but sometimes not so much.

I would say you should be able to find some locally grown ones, maybe out of Portland? Otherwise I know June.com has had them, but I think someone posted here that they've had problems lately.

On a completely different note, did you see that the NW AIFD has a hands on design program over April 5-6 in Spokane? I really want to go, but Spokane is a long way for me and we have committed to going to Greenleaf April 6 for J. Schwanke's wedding show. Anyway, hope to see you again somewhere along the way!

Michelle, thanks for the reply, have used anemones and they didn't do well at all in foam, only in a vase, I'll have to let my customer know that I can't guarantee they will do well in the arrangement style he wants.

I saw that Roses and More was doing a show in Spokane, didn't realize AIFD was involved at the same time somehow! Can I find out about it on the AIFD site? Guess I will check that out before I head out to visit the new baby. I'm also thinking about going to the Portland show as well, $$ could be a problem if the boss decides not to pay any of the costs. Spokane I can do on a day trip with no problem.

First of all - Congratulations on the new little one. You grandmothers, like us doting uncles, can spoil the baby all we want to and then send them home to Mommy.

Secondly.........I don;t recall ever seeing helibore in a wholesale. You might try one of the holland flower brokers. As far as black tulips......there is a real dark purple one that might work for black.

You can get Helibore from Holland at this time of year and I too would not recommend it be used in foam. In my experience it only last up to 7 days in water and its quite pricey ($4 to $7 a stem).

Thanks for the input on the tulip and heliobore. Customer brought a sample from his garden and it didn't last too well even in a vase. Not sure it will be available when he wants it and I don't want to have to deal with a bunch of it if it doesn't last. The tulips I saw online that had black in the title, looked dark purple as well. I think he'll be fine with that, as long as they aren't bright purple.

Loving visiting the new little one as long as I get to go home again!
