Hello, I'm "MoMo" and no, I do not own MoMoFlorist. Its a name I came out with at the moment. I'm in my mid 20s and have been working for a prominent florist for about 6 years. I'm here to learn new ideas and hopefully provide some as well. I am hoping to start my own shop in the next year to two at the most.

I do have a few questions I would like to get some knowledge on but not sure if this is the right thread to start that :tongue

What florist do you work for?

Ask away, click onto forums and pick the area for your topics, plenty of willing, friendly and qualified(or is it certified)folk on here that are only to pleased to be of assistance.

I work for www.myflorist.com
Located in McLean, VA

I didn't want to mention any names earlier because I didn't want someone snooping up on me, calling my work place find out if I work there and bla bla bla. Especially if I am trying to open my own shop. But I also can't get access to half of the website.

As for my position, I honestly don't know what it is. I never got a name for one but 6 years ago, I started out with answering phones and now I still do that, but I'm also in charge or our wire-desk and incharge of Internet orders, as I am the first person to come to work (beside the boss) then get those orders into the system. I also take care of most of the computer needs, and make/print flyers for the company.

As far as the question goes, I do have many, but for now, I wanted to know if it is necessary to copy right the business name? I mean, I don't want to open a shop and after 10 years, I have a problem and have to change everything, trucks, letterheads, envelops, website, signs, etc....

I came up with a name for the shop I want to open, already bought a domain name (as they are so hard to find and so many of them are taken). Made a few mock-ups for website design. I wouldn't mind making my own website through dreamweaver, though I'd have to find a good shopping cart and to host it. For now it's registered through www.godaddy.com

Hi. We need to know more about you before you can move around the rest of the site.

What do you do at MyFlowers, are you a designer, where did you get your training, is MyFlowers a website business only?

You get the idea. We're not "snooping" and we don't call people's places of work, but we do want to ensure the information remains free flowing.

Looking forward to hearing more about you.

Kind regards.

I understand V. Thank you to whoever that just made me a member :yourock:
I did edit my last post, which tells a little more details about myself.

As far as our business, we're DEFINETLY NOT MyFlowers. Sorry I had to say that because so many people call us and mostly talk to me (since I take care of internet orders) because they ordered flowers through myflowers.com and then I have to explain to them that we're MYFLORIST.COM lol.

We're a full service florist in the Northern VA. Definetly make our own arrangements and deliveries, at least for all the local orders. As many of you can tell from the website (template) that we're a Teleflora Florist as well.

But do check out our website. Thank you!

Thanks for clearing that up. :) Welcome to Flowerchat.

You work for a "shop" now and you are going to open your own "shop" in the near future. Do you intend to actually handle any flowers or just the orders? It sounds like your "shop" will be an internet only shop - is that a fair statement.

Website, it's a very important part of businss. Its a very important part of marketing your business. It gives your customer access to things you have to offer, and visual pictures work better than to explain "a vase arrangement with roses, gerbs, tulips, alstors, irises...etc"

Having a website doesn't mean it'll be an internet only business, in other words, order gathering florist. I will work with real flowers and real delivery drivers. Also, its easier to type "shop" than "flowershop" lol

Welcome - but are you just going to be "design room " or will you have a retail shop?

Depends, if at first, I can't find a place for the price, I might have a design room and eventually relocate to a place where I can both. Eventually as business grows, I want to have a space for the designers to work and make designs as customers can walk in and have a seperate place for my staff to answer phone calls.

Welcome to FC. I to am opening my own florist in the near future, You are in the right place for answers. Just remember having a website isnt everything you will need a stable business before a website. If you have a website with no building how will you make your orders? You can just take orders and wire them to other florist. Advertising online is not the way to get locals. Locals are you main business. Do what you can to maintain a good local connection.

BTW, Thanx to everyone who's given me the warm welcome! Forgot to mention this earlier.

Flowergirl, thanx, and I already have spaces covered. Webiste will be an imporant part for me because of the type of customers I will have surrounding me (Corporate businesses and private govt contractors). They are always sending flowers to their clients and their employees. Having a professional website lets them know that yes, we are a florist and we're professional for you to do business with us. Fortunately, there are so many businesses here, being right next to Washington DC, and all the new busineses that are coming here, always looking for a good florist they can do business with.

Hey, I have a question for ya, Does's the owner that writes your check, know of your opening a shop? Just wondering how up front with the owner you are?:dunno:

Im sorry MOMO I just dont see your logic behind everything you are saying. In order to get big businesses you 1. need to show them u have a big enough "shop" to fulfil there orders. 2. be able to keep prices down. And from what I have seen companys dont need a website that is spectacular website. How do u plan on advertising your website? No point in having one if no one knows about it. Search engins will only show the websites that pay big bucks first. So yours might not even show up on a search. Just some stuff to think about. Not trying to talk down to ya just want you to think about everything before you get into a rut, And have wasted everything.

Elmo, no, I haven't told him right now, and it's pretty pointless to do so. I'm 24 and worked there since I was 18. He knows that soon as my wife's done with her college, I will be moving and starting my own business. He's told me from the first year that "Mo, u remind me of myself when I was younger and believe me, I didn't like to work for anyone myself which is why I have my own business and your life is not going to end with working for me." When the right time comes, he'll know. I've seen people come and go but i've been loyal to him for 6 years and my boss is not the type of person who's going to take it to the heart and think I screwed him over. He's had at least 3 people leave his company and open their own shops and he's never gone after them. Well 1, because she was stealing our business pretending to be still a aprt of our company. But that was stupid to go and screw him over. I am not that type of person. Would you take it to the heart if your employee left your company and moved on with their lives???

Flowergirl, every companies are different from one another. You have your own way and I have my own way. I am not saying your logics are wrong but to be fair, don't think my ideas won't work for me. My boss has been in this business for 20 years now and believe me, he's doing something right and I like his ideas. Things are different from places to places. I can have a huge shop but w/out customers, it's pretty pointless. As far as search engines go, you don't always have to pay big $$$ get the top spot, especially when you have 2 other florists competing with you in that area. Anyway, we'll definetly talk more :thumbsup
