I need to have open white roses for a party Friday evening. Unfortunately, the Virginias I ordered didn't come in and they supstituted Vendellas. The roses are gorgeous, but TIGHT!!!!!! Does anyone know any tricks to open them (other than warm water and lots of food). I don't want to hand open them because I am a clod and will bruise the crap out of the heads.

Does the pollen in the water trick work (like it does for lilies)? I haven't had great luck with putting a plastic bag over the top (faux greenhouse) either.

HELP!!!!!!

Thanks!

Amy,

You've got plenty of time. Find a warmer spot in your shop and leave them there overnight. I have a small space heater I can plug into the wall. I usually put it on about 70 degrees and then put the flowers in the bathroom for a few hours.

In your case, it's still early. I'd bet if you leave them in a warmer location overnight they will start cracking by tomorrow morning. Just don't put them in the cooler, obviously.

I do the same thing. A warm small space like a bathroom works great! Funny, I usually have the opposite problems with roses. It seems like as soon as they come out of the cooler they open too fast. I request fresh, tight roses when I order.

You might want to get the water good and warm then pull a poly bag up and over the roses, The warm humid environment will open those suckers, just be careful you don't let them rot...Vendelas open pretty quick and rot even quicker if left too long in the humid bag...They will probably open on their own if stuck into very warm water...

NEVER EVER use food when you want to open roses, or any other flower for that matter.

Food prevents the flowers from opening!

Also white opens faster than other colors for me. Yellow does too. Could it be to do with the color pigmentation, rather the lack of it?
This is a factor in our hair, darker hair is much stronger than most lighter colored hair.

if all else fails....at the last day....run very warm water...cup the flower head in the cups of your hands and gently run the warm water into the flower head....gently shake off residue water and let air dry and then return to cooler for a few hours to harden....this relaxes them and I've never had it fail... GOOD LUCK...EXPERIMENT ON ONE EARLIER....
