In trying to research on Flower Chat my best course of action to try to get up on a Google 7 Pack listing for an local adjacent town, I see that there is an infestation of fakie doos, http://www.google.com/search?q=flow...-us&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&startIndex=&startPage=1 . I am going to re-read this post, hopefully and suggestions will be helpful.

In reading David Mihm report on Local Search Engine Ranking Factors, since I do not have and address in the city of search....how is the best way to get/gather "citations"? I just printed the report...., hopefully I am figure out the other things I need to do:). Any other advice for Flower Chatters?

Thanks!

I have a similar situation as there is no real florist in an adjacent town that I serve. I had hoped to get a new domain with flowers(that town).com and have it redirect to my web site. Then I read that a domain that doesn't have any content, but only redirects to another site doesn't get picked up by Google. Then I thought of putting just a few pages on the new site then having a link to my main site to see more pictures and to place an order. I believe that are some really inexpensive hosting sites for something like that. Then, I read that Google considers it bogus to have a domain name with one of your key words and a town/city name unless that is the actual name of your business. And I think there are issues with having multiple sites with the same business address. (Of course none of this seems to apply to dOGs.)
I'm sure that Cathy and Ryan can set us straight on all this.

Adam at Belvedere has had good success in getting local search rankings for neighbouring towns by putting relevant content on his site about the different areas he serves.

I've also had good success using geositemaps :)

Thanks Ryan. How do we do that with our Strider sites? Would we put them under Static Pages??

You can begin to fix the NON-LOCAL PHONY problem yourselves.

First, you need to set up a FREE Google Account if you have not so already.

https://www.google.com/accounts/NewAccount

Once you have your Google Account, you can do the search for FLORIST YOUR ZIP and FLORIST YOUR CITY/TOWN.

FLORIST EDNA TX

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=florist+edna+tx&btnG=Search&aq=f&oq=&aqi=

Next, click on the NON-LOCAL PHONY LISTING

In this case, it was Edna Florist Directory

http://maps.google.com/maps/place?h...lorist&hnear=edna+tx&cid=17114026156420163202

Next, scroll down to and click on WRITE A REVIEW

You will then be prompted to log into your Google Account.

Once logged in, write the review with the truth.

Check off 1 Star (poor) and type in the Title Heading: "This company is NOT LOCATED in Edna, Texas."

Then in the Review field: This company is a NON-LOCAL PHONY Middleman order broker operating from Casselberry, Florida. If you need a REAL FLORIST serving Edna, Texas, please call McAdams Florist at 361-575-2307. www.floristdetective.com

Sometimes, this new right window gets FUNKY and just disappears. Don't know why, but if it happens to you, just start the process again.

I did the first one for you and you can work on all of the rest.

Next, click on EDIT PLACE

A window will eventually open up on the right side of your screen.

Click on the box which says: REPORT A PROBLEM

In the new larger window, check off PLACE DOESN'T EXIST

Then, enter the truth in the COMMENTS box and click on REPORT PROBLEM.

At the top of the box, the field will now indicate "Edits to this location will not appear immediately" which confirms your effort.

This is when the wait begins. Sometimes, Google fixs the problem in a few days and sometimes they don't.

Keep checking back and keep repeating the same process.

Also, I checked your site's KEYWORDS and did not see Edna, Texas in the list nor did I notice a list of all the zips codes you service in that field as well.

You might want to have your web host add Edna in as well as all of the the zip codes your shop services too.

Still time to clean House!

I went into El Dorado Hills and started to identify and clean out the NON-LOCAL PHONIES.

http://maps.google.com/maps/place?h...r=el+dorado+hills+ca&cid=17456455129452072773

You still have time now to complete the process before the Christmas Holiday sets in and the PHONIES are able to steal your stuff.

yeah, they are everywhere. I've chased them around East Millinocket and Medway Maine. I think they've moved into the woods off I-95 on Google maps now.

Holy Cow Rhonda!

Don't think I've ever seen a worse case of PHONY DIRECTORY listings in any one area.

The Google Map Measle problem amazed even MEE! lol

Anyway, I zapped as many as I could for you this evening as I sat watching my SI FI Channel while slurping my Long Island Iced Teas.

If I get stuck in the woods along I-95 in Maine and need a place to stay, you'll leave the light on for me, right? lol

Actually, using info pages. I put a post on the Florist SEO blog around the beginning of this year outlining how to build an information silo. You can use this method to rank for occasions, topics, locations, whatever you want to focus on :)
