Could someone tell me how to incorpaorate pomegranit and grapes into arrangements without getting flies and bride wants pomegranit cut open . How can I keep it from looking dried up. This is for Nov. wedding cenerpieces, wants greenery with friuts instead of flowers. Thanks for any help!!!!!!!

I would use a clear varnish on them so that they are sealed. the grapes shouldn't be a problem. I would leaf shine these to make them nice a shine. I only thing I would do is talk to the bride if you are going to use different products on the fruit just incase there is a chance that the guesses may try eating them.

If you open the Poms carefully and tear away the white membrane (they are sectioned inside) you will have the beautiful ruby fruit visible with no dripping exposed . I do cure Pumpkins by soaking them in a bleach water solution for an hour or so and then air drying, to deter the fruit flies, so I guess that would work since it's not a long term thing. Sounds beautiful love to see pics!

Thanks Johan & Lorrie , I'll post pics if we get to do them. We are just in the bidding phase right now

I've used both, and many more types of fruit and veg in arrangements, and NEVER have had a problem with fruit, or any other type of flies, or with a dried out look. Just don't make them too far in advance, which of course you wouldn't do, because you don't want the ethelene in your coolers. I agree that the guests should not eat the fruit, but they will, which is why I have never used any type of chemical enhancement . Anyway, if your product is fresh, you won't need to.

Gotta agree with OB1. We've never had a problem either. We never use any chems. on fruit. You may open yourself up to a major law suit if someone can't resist eating a grape. Just not worth it. Depending on the arrangement, you can make them in advance & add the fruit before they go out. Leave room for the frt. & add an extra flowers if needed. These are really fun to make-have a good time with them.

Whenever I use fresh fruit in a design........Two things I do....First, I make sure the fruit is a fresh as possible. Two...I use wooden food quality bamboo skewers to pick fruit in if need be. Reason for this......the skewers are MADE for food, the are consumable. If there are children and they decide to take a nibble......then no harm done as they are made for food.

For fruit like bananas, grapes, etc......I use a wooden cowee wired pick and wrap the wire around the stem end of the banana or around the stem end of the grapes.

Now, I do this technique with Christmas parties.......I take fresh fruit......like a sliced open pomegranate for instance......I brush the entire slice with fresh egg white and dip into white sugar.......let dry. The egg white seals the fruit and the sugar gives it a cool icy, crystal feel.

FYI, cowee brand picks are dyed with vegtable dye, they wont hurt fruit either.

People are creatures of habit, they will eat the fruit.
Kids don't know any better, they will for sure eat the fruit. Spray them with nothing but water, and maybe some fruit wash.

I'd be more afraid of pomes staining linens and carpet and clothes.
