I know there is probably another thread on here somewhere on how to get roses to open, but after a brief search I can't find it.

I have a wedding tomorrow at 11:00 am and I can not seem to get the roses for it to open. Roses have been out of cooler a couple of days and recut today and placed in reasonably warm water and they still do not want to open.

Please!!! if any of you have any ideas or other methods I can try please post them. I would hate for this bouquet to have all closed roses in it. There are other flowers like peonies, stock and hypericum.

no swirl no open

If there isn't a swirl to the roses when they come in they will NEVER open...we call them Bullets when they come in tight and not slightly open. We send them back. Our wholesalers know better than to send us those.

These do have a bit of a swirl. They are not bullets, I know exactly what you are talking about and we also send those back. I am not sure why these are being so stubborn.

We've had success with warm water & left-over birth control pills.

Don't know why, but it sure opens them up quickly!

Thanks... I wish I had some birth control pills, unfortuantely I am past that stage and no girls either even close to being ready for that.

You may have a bigger problem than roses failing to open. :eek:oooops: Dare I ask how you discovered this secret property? Any experiments with Viagra?

Re the roses: Remove all the foliage, cut the stems as short as possible (to allow for the shortest distance for the water to travel), use Quick dip and then place them in a water/floral nutrient solution mix that's about 102 degrees (jacuzzi temp). Then bag the entire bucket to create a 'greenhouse' effect. Leave a few hours to over night.

Good luck.

Hmmm...Viagra...thanks for the low blow CHR, sure felt good!

I actually learned this from a really old, experienced designer with 45 years in the biz.

...and just so ya know...they were expired!

That was going to be my suggestion but I was too busy giggling over the bc method of opening roses!!

Are these things bullet tight? If so you are in trouble AND I hope that isn't the what you have.

Cathy's suggestions are very good. Hot water though. You got to get these things opened up. I used to think warm water was sufficient.

HOT HOTTER HOTTEST.... what ever comes out of your tap won't hurt those roses.

Cathy wants you to build humidity and the hottest water you use will be the best bet.

Cathy, we used to do this BB, is this where you got this trick from?

Joe

THANKS EVERYONE... Got them open and bouquet is complete. See picture below.

Not a very good photo will post a better one later when I have more time.

I would like to add a little lavender lilac to it. If I glue in a few small pieces here in there do you think the lilac will wilt?

Anyone ever hear about steaming roses?

A long time ago, 1979, when I was the leader of a delegation of US Florists under the People to People International banner, visiting Scandinavia, Eastern Europe, Soviet Union and Aalsmer, we met a florist is Stockholm who had a pan of boiling water which generated steam and he cut rose stems while holdling them in the steam, just above the boiling water. Had to wear gloves for protection. We could not believe the vase life he got, 3 times better than the best in our group.

A lovely bouquet, my nose want to sniff the flowers. :)

Pretty pretty bouquet!

How funny I was having almost the same dilemma - my Attache & Topaz roses for todday's wedding were just breaking open a little. Re-cut w/quick dip and placed them in hot water in shorty vases, and set the vases in our steel sink. Filled the sink with more hot water to make a steam bath. I came in this morning to see it worked like a charm - also worked very well with the hydrangea, whose florets were still a little too closed for my purposes.

Can't wait for this weekend to be over - weddings, and proms up the wazoo!

back to work, another looooong day, and we're attending today's wedding, so we'll get to see our work "in action".

Kind of like us holding our heads over steam to open up clogged nasal passages! :)

thanks

What timing! I'm having the same problem with some roses! Thank you sooo much for the suggestion!

Tom, I've heard your story about the cutting over steam before. Wish I could remember who told me because he/she must have been on the same trip with you.

Woo Hoo to this weekend being over. Weddings and proms! What a work out!
