My friends have asked me to make a fresh wreath for them for next weekend. Another florist had been doing it for them in the past. What they want is a 21 inch fresh wreath made out of pink & blue carnations. My question is would you use "just for flowers" to spray the carnations blue or would you stem dye them? How many carnations do you think it would take? I know.... blue carnations! but that's what they want.

they also want banners with the children's names on them in script...

thanks for your advice

Air brushing with Just for Flowers would be quicker, but I also like to stem dye, and since you have enough time to do it, I would stem dye. For that size of wreath, I would think you would need 2 1/2- 3 dozen carnations, depending on the fullness your looking for. You might be able to use less, depending on how you green it in, and how full the carnations are.

Yes, please tell us about dip dye... I'm not familiar with it.

I was thinking I would need about 3 dozen carnations. Thinking of using some white statice too.

Well, I would just BUY the carnations blue to begin with!!

But I can tell you about dip it if you want....

It comes in quarts and gallons.
You literally dip the head of the flower in the dye, then in a bucket of water, then again in another bucket of clean water, and then you let them dry.

I always use small black buckets cause the dye will discolor you buckets, hands, fabrics, etc...
So lay down lots of newspapaers as well.

Dip it is fantastic for big dye jobs.

I 100% agree with Joan dip it for this project is better than JFF.

However, I would just buy the carns already dyed. you have PLENTY of time!!

And if It were me I'd order 4 bunches of the carns.. best to have too many than not enough! 2 bunches pink and 2 bunches blue.

And don't feak out if the blue carnations come in puny, they dye them while they are dry. So hydrate them and they will be fine.
But you don't have to worrie about that with the dip it.

Also, be sure to tell your wholesaler you want big full carnations, no green ones!!

I think it would be lovely to have two interlocking heart shapes.

Use the pink and blue carns, brigher on the outer edges and fading into lighter tones as the hearts inlock.

If you get them already dyed and they're bright, lighten then with a little JFF whitewash. Or darken light ones with the JFF. There's a beautiful blue we use for baby boys.

I just like the idea of the interlocking hearts, two babies together forever.

The interlocking heart idea is a good one. I will also check with the wholesalers to see about getting already dyed carnations.

thank for all the great ideas everyone!

dip dye is a liquid - used it and it's a mess !! stains your hands, clothes etc.. and you have to wait for your flowers to dry

Just as easy to mist them with the spray paint.

Either one works - just depends on how big of a mess you want to make.

Dip Dye a mess? Any worse then spraying? Not.

Pour dye in a bucket, dip into dye, shake off into same bucket, rinse with running water until water runs clear, just like when you dye your hair.

No mess, all mess goes down the drain. Make sure you have a funnel to pour back into the bottle all dye left. It is reusable! Do not add any water to it.

If you place the bucket of dye in the sink, and then rinse in the sink you will have no problems. Never have needed newspaper, mops, rags, ect. Never gt it on my hands either, unlike that dam spray that gets on my hands and clothes and shoes. I wear black most of the time and if I look real close at my clothes they have the tinest paint dots on them, I know they are there and it pisses me off, and more then once I have had to bring in shoes to get the tiny tiny dots of silver off of them!

As far as drying, you can wait the 30 minutes for the flower to dry or you can use right away. I usually use right away as all the dye has been rinced off, the flower is stained.
If you want a soft delicate (baby) look. This is your best bet.

Now I'm thinking I might try the dip dye. Have you used it on roses? Bride today wants blue roses.
thanks for your help!

There was a place in florida that sent me blue roses one time in a "trial" pack. Do you know anywhere else to get them? I only need one bunch for this wedding. thanks

I ordered a trial once.... the blue roses turned water blue... your hands touched the stems, their blue too. I wondered if they had been put in dye to drink(stems)Don't think they were a spray job.

We ended up taking two 12" oasis hearts and wiring them together. I was able to get already dyed carnations from the wholesaler. we made one heart all blue and one all pink and outlined them both with lumonium. My friends were very happy. They said it was the most beautiful wreath ever! Not sure about that but as long as they were happy.

thanks everyone for your help and ideas

The easiest thing I have found to remove paint from me is the MAGIC SPONGE. I even use the dollar store version. Works wonders!

Me too! Even removes the majority of flat black overspray that almost completely covers your hand (I'm not a neat painter!).
