Okay, so I am a little embarrassed to post this but, I need help!

I got a call this morning for a sympathy design to contain the Blessed Mary. Anything I should know about the placement of the flowers, is it taboo to design them in a certain way or use certain flowers/colors? I may be really paranoid but, I want to do this right and I don't want to do something to offend anyone or in bad taste. I've gotta design this in the morning.

I was just thinking of using hydrangeas, roses, assorted greens, callas, and a couple other flowers in shades of pink/lav/light blue with the Blessed Mary standing amongst the flowers in a nice ceramic container.

Thanks so much for saving me, yet again!!!

That Sounds Nice. We Usually A Large Basket And Use Hyacinth Stake To Hold The Blessed Mother In Place- 3 Stakes Up The Center Of The Statue Usually Holds Here In Place. Because The Blessed Mothers Colors Are Lt Blue We Usually Use Some Vlue Flowers Hydrangeas Delph Or Iris And Light Blue Bow. Hope This Helps. I Love Making Those Arr!

That helps so much and makes me worry a LOT less ;) I really appreciate your speedy reply. Sometimes when I am not "up" on certain customs it scares me to try to create something in honor of them.

Thanks Again Charlie!!!

No rules really on flower types or colors. Sounds like you have a nice mix going. I usually make her standing in the middle and do a nice arch like frame around her. Maybe you could with the callas and then the rest almost designed like a crescent with flowers low and in front. I am sure you already have an idea of ehat this will look like in your minds eye and you are well on the road to a successful piece. Good luck!!!

Heather - your arrangement sounds lovely.

White and blue are traditionally considered Mary's colors. Roses are also associated with her (hence Rosary).

Like Charlie said, insert a couple tallish hyacinth stakes in foam and then slip the statue onto them through the hole in the base.

Here are a couple photos of arrangements using a Virgin Mary statuette.

Lori & Cathy,

Thank you both so much. Cathy, your designs gave me a ton of inspiration, as usual, thanks for posting them. It's awesome to hear that blue and white are colors associated with the Virgin Mary...that fits into my idea perfectly! I may just take out the pink and go straight for the blues/whites.

Can't thank you all enough!

I had to do a similar design in Tuesday for delivery today ( Wed. is day off for me ) using a beige and green robed ceramic angel.

I created a curly willow arch after mounting her with hyacinth stakes - and created the design with sword fern, ming fern, leather, springerii on the arch, and using pink and lavender larkspur, peach roses, pink carnations, white lisianthia and cream hydrangea.

Using the Virgin Mary should not be a problem......and a little hint ( If she has a solid base or you are concerned that hyacinth stakes would not be secure.....PLace a small square of silver duct tape on the bottom, and then glue one of the teleflora posts that come with the lanterns, ceramic cakes, angels, etc. on to the duct tape......the glue sticks to the tape, the tape holds the figurine....and it is secure.
