We are doing a huge wedding in a couple weeks and I am wondering what others have done in the same situation.
The bride wants 2 white callas and one green calla with curly willow tied to the end of each row of chairs, and 2 clusters of 9 callas with willow on each side or the arbor they are being married in front of. These call for no vase or container, just a satin bow holding them together and securing them to the chair or arbor.
Here is my dilemma-- It's in mid summer here and temps could be over 90 degrees easily. The wedding is in the early evening late afternoon, so it will be set during the hottest part of the day, I am worried about wiltage--even though they will only have to look good for about 2-3 hours, I just don't want them to wilt prematurely. What have others done? I was thinking about putting a wrap of some kind around the bottoms of the stems, or using a clear design tray setting on the ground to allow them to draw water, without distracting from the design. I have lots of thoughts just not tons of experience with callas in this type of application-- I've always used them in vased presentations. Any input would be greatly appreciated- Thanks in advance, mrflowermarket

agree - callas hold a lot of water. As long as no one is relying on them to be used after the ceremony & pics, they should hold fine.

good luck!
:)

The stems will pretty much be left full length, and I did plan to assemble the day before and keep i buckets to transport. thanks

Agree with the others, they should be fine although our version of a hot day and yours may be two different things but i have wired a calla as a test and left it on the counter once, it looked as fresh as a daisy!!

Make sure you take pics and share, I am always looking for new pew ideas.

His area is pretty much like ours, hot and dry in the summer, I would be interested in hearing how they hold up!

Trish

Thanks for the input----

We are in an arid mountain desert. Hot and dry-- usually 85-90-- sometimes up to 100. but this year has been very rainy-- and a little muggy the last few weeks. Record rains for this year. I hoped that the callas would hold-- so I'll try them and hope for the best.
I'll take pics and post them, It's going to be an amazing wedding. thanks mrflowermarket

just curious is this wedding out of doors? If inside do you have air conditioning? When your weather is hot do you find inside venues as difficult as outdoor with your lack of humidity? When we get hot we get humid but most places have air.

also my thought was to use Erlene's stem wrap method (condoms) and then wrap them with a satin the color of the calla stems.

the wedding is outdoors, hopefully under a tent, do condoms really work? I guess with water added?
inside venues are always air conditioned, But this is definitely outside. thanks again for the ideas mrflowermarket

Do you have Crysal Glory spray which prevents evaporation in the US. This will help. Calla are very resilient. We did a wedding last year for a bride. During summer (only in early 80F) She got the vases for the wedding and wanted 3 calla and greenery in each one. When the vases arrived the day before the wedding for us to use the necks were so small we had to cut the calla to the top of the vase insert canes and put the canes into the vase instead of the stems to creat the look she wanted. Sprayed in Glory Spray and kept our finger crossed. They lasted for 48hours like this aparently out of water. (We did tell the bride the vases were wrong and told her our solution, she was cool about it.)
