Business: 24Hourflorist, Inc.

Location: Slidell, LA (I am in Baton Rouge though)

Type of Business: Design, manufacture and sell flower vending kiosks

About Me: My background is computers and programming. I own a computer retail store in Baton Rouge, LA. My uncle owns a flower shop in Slidell, LA called Weathers Flower Market. My uncle patented a new type of flower vending machine and asked me to write the software for it. That is how I got into the flower business. I would like to get some feedback on our product and see what florists think of the idea. That is one reason why I joined the forum.

Thanks,
Darren

More about what we do...

I don't want to break any forum rules using this area to post sales presentations. Heck, it's my first day and I want to get approved for full access. To talk off forum you can e-mail me at [email protected] or IM me on AOL IM at darrenheaven.

Also, if it is ok for me to post details here someone (admin) please let me know.

Thanks,
Darren

Sorry Darren, it's wasn't my intention to get you "busted" as it were. I was just curious about the theory behind kiosks. You're ok in my book. :)

Darren,

Now that you're approved, you're welcome to post an ad for your service in the Business Services forum - or feel free to expand on your description here.

I look forward to hearing more about this. We looking into floral vending machines a bit 5 years or so ago, but it didn't go far.

More on flower vending machine

Our flower vending machine is a large 16 compartment vending machine with a 17" touch screen. You can see what it looks like here www.24hourflorist.net

Using videos, voice prompts and graphics customers are guided through the simple sales process. The machine takes both cash and credit cards.

When a customer is not making a purchase the machine shows video clips advertising your shop as well as upcoming holidays.

We ONLY sell these to local florists who can service them.

Florists can monitor their vending machines from their PC at their shop. The only requirement is an internet connected PC. This allows florists to see the inventory in the vending machine in real time. This way they can see sales instantly and also see exactly how long each arrangement has been in each compartment so they can determine when items should be freshened or replaced if not sold in a timely manner.

Because the florist can check the inventory in real time they can send the proper replacement product out with the delivery driver to service the unit whenever needed.

The machine cannot give change, instead if customers pay cash and are due change they are issued a printed voucher to use toward a future purchase. Of course this is not an issue with credit card payments.

Placing these units in high traffic areas like hospitals, office building lobbies, hotels, airports, shopping malls etc that are within your local delivery area allow you to not only increase sales but also give you an advertising presence in these high traffic areas.

The units are sold on a lease purchase basis for $500/month.

Of course there is a lot more info that this, but this is the short version.

Thanks for taking the time,
Sincerely,
Darren Vallaire

Darren...welcome to our "community"....

One question would be, what about the internet connection at the Kiosk end? What have been your experiences trying to secure this little detail?

Internet connection to the kiosk

We have only 3 units deployed so far.

The toughest one was is in a hospital. On that one the unit is actually tied into the hospitals network. I won't lie, that was an bit of an ordeal. The hospital included the internet in the lease agreement and later regretted it when they realized they had a potential security issue. Anyway, after a 2 week delay the hospital finally configured their firewall to allow the kiosk internet access and got it working. No problems since then.

Another unit is in the food court of the local shopping mall. Bell South (now AT&T) simply installed DSL to the kiosk no questions asked, was very easy.

The 3rd deployment is actually inside a flower shop. What the flower shop owner did was to build a small room off the front door of the shop and put the kiosk in there. Now when she locks up the shop the leaves the front room to the kiosk open much like some banks do for their ATM's that are indoors. She already had internet at her shop so this was just added on her router.

This website is interesting.

Here is a quote from the website that confuses me.

"When you enter the zip code of where you want your flowers delivered to you are automatically connected to the local florists web site that services that zip code."

When I enter a zip code, I am redirected to a selection guide on that website. Can you explain how you connect customers with flowershops within a given zip code?

thank you

Joe,
We only have 3 florists in our system right now.

Especially for you in Hammond, Louisiana
Weathers Flower Market in Slidell, Louisiana
and The Flower Loft in Salem Ohio.

If you enter a zip code for any of those markets you will be ordering direct from those florists. You will see their name/logo/phone number at the top of the screen. Otherwise we have to manually hand off the order to a local florist. The hope is that one day we will have members in most markets, but we are just getting started.

Here are some of the zip codes that have florists so far:
70458 (one for Slidell, LA)
70403 (one for Hammond, LA)
44460 (one for Salem, OH)

For $29.95/month florists can join our network and they get a web site just like the one you see and become part of our network.

Each florist has the ability to add their own custom arrangements to the web site with a simple web point and click interface. Also, local florists can change the prices on any items or remove items they don't wish to offer. The products not only show up on the web sites but also on all the kiosks.

For example if someone goes to the kiosk in the food court of the shopping mall in Slidell Louisiana and does a delivery order to Salem Ohio they are shown only the inventory that the Salem Ohio florist has chosen to offer for deilvery there along with their own custom pricing etc.

Of course if the florist does not want to customize the product offerings or prices then the standard items are still there which are maintained (photos and prices) by us here in house.

The 3 florists that are online now also all have purchased a kiosk from us as well. But we don't require this to get a web site.

Hi Darren,

Thank you for the response.

I hope you don't mind me asking a couple questions but I do have some.

Since your site is serving 3 zip codes, currently, how does this site differ from anyother typical OG site?

respectfully,

Joe

Joe,
It's not problem asking questions, the more the merrier.

I did not mean to imply we only service 3 zip codes. We currently only have 3 member florists. I simply gave out one zip code from each. The full service zip codes are as follows:

"Especially for You Florist" in Hammond LA covers the following zips: 70454, 70401,70402,70402,70403,70404,70711,70446,70451,70455,70466,39713

"The Flower Loft" in Salem Ohio covers the following zips: 44401, 44406, 44408, 44411, 44422, 44423, 44431, 44432, 44460, 44449, 44490, 44601, 44609, 44619, 44634, 44672

"Weathers Flower Market" in Slidell, LA covers the following zips: 70458, 70459, 70460, 70461, 70448, 70470, 70471, 70433, 70434, 70435, 70452, 70445

As for how we are different from other typical OG sites.... First let me confess I only have knowledge of the major sites like FTD, Teleflora, 1800Flowers. But here is what I feel is unique about our system.

1. Our system is designed to integrate with the kiosks that are placed in hospitals, malls, office buildings, airports etc. Today this does not mean much since we only have 3 kiosks out there, but our hope is to have many of them out there in the future. No other web site out there is tied to an actual retail point of sale.

2. We don’t want to be an order gatherer. When someone goes to any of our customers web sites (or our main house web site) and types in the delivering zip code we show them right then who the delivering florist is going to be including full direct contact info with that florist. The customer sees this even before selecting an item to purchase. Our intent here is to show that we are truly trying to connect the customer with the florist and not to us as an order gatherer. The customer is free to contact the florist directly and bypass our system entirely at this point if they like. This is especially useful if the customer has pre-order questions or a special request.

3. Another difference is the way our system easily allows the local florist to customize their database. For example you could have items for sale that reflect local sports teams, local universities etc. When someone from across the U.S. goes to any of our member web sites or even a physical kiosk location across the country and indicates they want to deliver to one of your zip codes they will instantly see the unique offerings you have for your delivery area. This is a very unique feature that I think over the long haul will keep customers coming back since they will be able to have a much more "non generic" selection of products to choose from. This feature is also useful if you don’t want to offer certain types of items at certain times of the year due to weather considerations.

4. Another difference is the way money is split on wire orders. Orders placed at your web site or at one of your kiosks for delivery in your area net you 100% of the sale price and $10 order delivery fee that is charged to the customer. Orders placed at other member florists web sites or at other member florists kiosks for delivery in your service area are divided as follows: You would get 80% of the items sale price (again, the price YOU set as the price YOU want to sell that item for) and the referring florist would keep 20% for getting the customer for you. There is also the flat $10 delivery fee always charged to the customer. The referring florist keeps $6 of the $10 and the house (our company) keeps $4 of the $10 fee for transmitting the order and processing the money between the two florists.

5. Another difference is the way the money is deposited to you. On our system the money is deposited to your account electronically within 2 business days of the delivery being made on each and every order. We don't hold your money and give it to you later in a lump.

Are we talking about floral vending machines.... or are we talking about order transmission from web site to filling florist?

Boss,
I was referring to delivery orders placed either at the web sites or at the floral vending machines.

Customers using a floral vending machine can purchase cash & carry items from the machine and can also place orders for delivery to anywhere in the U.S.

Of course when a cash & carry sale is made from a vending unit there is no fee's charged to the customer other than the price of the item and the florist who owns the vending machine keeps 100% of the money received from the customer.
