Hi,
Has anyone been to a workshop that features
Hitomi Gilliam AIFD, of Mission, BC, Canada?
This designer will be in Northern California in April. Sounds like a good workshop, has anyone been to a workshop by this designer?
Thanks,
Sharon

Really liked her presentation

I was at a Christmas design show in Boston last fall, very interesting ideas and very good presentation. She does a monthly column in Flowers &, her design show stuff was better suited to everyday flowershops.

I saw her in Portland, OR and loved her! I have been dreaming and trying to figure out how I could swing going to the event in CA and the AIFD symposium later this summer....

She has such wonderful explanations for everything she does -- nothing she designs happens by accident. She really emphasizes the elements and principles of design and talks a lot about WHY the "on the edge" things that she does works.

I would highly reccommend going if you can!

Hitomi is a design genius. http://www.hitomi-art.com/

She's bright, warm, friendly and great teacher. We sent one of our designers to a class with her last year, two to a local workshop this year and one of Phil's teaching assistants just came back from the class she taught at Texas A&M.

Her work is highly detailed and abstract, founded in her background in the Sogetsu school of Ikebana.

You may not be able to use everything you learn on a daily basis (some of the techniques are intensely time-consuming) but you will gain valuable knowledge about form, color, texture and how to wisely choose and use materials to make an impact. :)

She will be at Nurserymen's in Half Moon Bay. April 22, 2007. I can send you the link if you would like.

If you have the chance to do one of her workshops it will be something you will never forget. She was just at The Benz School in College Station, Texas last week. I didn't get to attend the workshop because of work, but I know some designers who did and the pictures of the work they produced is AMAZING. Hitomi is so down to earth, humble, and an extraordinary educator. We were honored by a visit to our shop from Hitomi and Jim Johnson last week after her workshop. All I have to say is WOW! What an honor! She talked with us so enthusiactly for almost 2 hours. We went on and on. She's an exciting and energizing personality. I felt as though I really missed out on a once in a lifetime kind of workshop. Go if you can, you will not regret it. I will not let the chance pass me by if it presents itself again.

Hitomi

Where do you start to explain Hitomi? I think every designer in the world should be able to experience her. I have studied with her many times and she has even come to my town and spent a week with me when I lived in Missouri and put on a World Class Show.

No matter what it costs or where you are....it will change your world. She had the ability to bring things out of you that no one would even know were inside you. She stretches your abilities to the nth degree and then stretches it even more.

There are some really great teachers throughout the world and I have studied with many of them. They each have something to add to your repertoire of design and ability, but, after taking a class from her years ago, it took me two years before I could drive my car correctly....I was so busy observing the world from a whole different vantage point and noticing the beauty and shapes of everything on this earth.

I have been with her when she has given programs to non-florists and non designers and she still has the ability to capture everyone's spirit. Never, have I heard anyone act or look bored in any of her seminars. She can relate to anyone on this earth......and that is saying a lot.
