I sold my flower shop and home in Colorado three years ago and moved to Merida, Yucatan, Mexico. Waiting for more than a year to obtain a permit and working with an accountant that did not know what he was doing, I have finally opened a small flower shop (Floreria) in the central part of the city. When I learned about this site through the Florist Review magazine, I felt it a good idea to expand my horizons and boy do I need that. Mexico is a wonderful country, but doing business as usual here is a very different story, one has to be very creative and frugal when you are used to having everything available in the states. Merida is very tropical and hot, the plant life here is incredible and I am having a wonderful time learning and experiencing new ways of life. What a wonderful place for those, " Destination Weddings"! This site gives the opportunity to share with people in the business, ideas in design and of doing business, I am very happy to see it is available to all. My name is Terry , and I want to thank you for your time.

Que Tenga Buen Dia!

Y hola a tu, tambien! Bienvenidos, Terry! (Sorry, this keyboard does not have the upside down exclamation point..... or accent mark or tilda, for that matter.)

Connie, thank you for your reply. Not to worry, my keyboard has all of the accents, etc, this one just does not know how to use them! YIKES!! Having a very tranquil Good Friday in Merida.

Thanks Rewolf!

When a roll of bulldog tape will set you back $14.00 usd, one buys cellaphane tape and it works. Design master is $8.00usd a can, when you find it, limited colors and containers are either very basic and ugly. I have been cutting tops off 1 and 2 liter plastic soda bottles and covering them with bannana leaves, tied with raffia and I must say they are quite attactive and my way of recycling. It has been fun and good for me to take things at a different angle. Thanks, T

Dianne, thank you for you note. My shop is small and modest, the clientele base is slowly growing, but I am the new kid on the block and I know it will take time. Trying to advertise and promote the shop is my main objective now, as always, when I can land that first big wedding or Quinceanos and all are very pleased, then things will take off.

Saludos, T

Terry,

Welcome to FlowerChat. Looking forward to hearing all you have to share with us. Just got back from Mexico...wanted to stop in a couple of florist shops, but didn't take the time--darn it! Loved hearing your ingenious cost saving tips.

What an exciting adventure you're on. I visited Merida in 2001 and loved it. (Some day I'd like to go back and stay at Xcanatun, a hacienda resort just outside Merida on the road to Progresso.) Are you located close to the plaza in front of the Gobierno Palacio?

I, and I'm sure others, will enjoy stories of your challenges and successes. Welcome to FlowerChat, Terry!

Hola Caroline,

Not to worry about Spanish, I do not know if I will ever be able to speak the language as I would like. What gives me courage is that the Mexican people are very forgiving and appreciate any attempt to speak the language. I am sure they have many funny stories to tell their friends and family and that is O.K What part of Mexico did you have you honeymoon? (Luna de Miel) Luna=moon,de=of, Miel=honey....Clever!

Thank you for your note, I hope I will have the chance to contribute and to learn(I will never stop learning!) Wishing you well in England, I hope one day to visit you wonderful country.

Best Regards, Terry

Flew in to Cancun, drove up coast and stayed in an old fashioned beach fronted complex with waves lapping our private thatched bungalow thingy, spent a week there do the snorkling, Xhal etc bit, then hopped over Merida, Chichinitsi (spelling?) and somewhere else I can't remember name of but an amazing converted monestry where I ate Locust and cactus salad serenaded by singers. Finally into Mexico City to do more pyramids, opera house and scary taxi rides! Sounds like it didn't make an impression as I can't remember every place name but it soooo did - not least chocolate chicken, the be-jewelled cockroaches that were on display in the markets we went to and the incredible (and scary) difference between the people inside the Opera House and the beggers living in the drains outside.

If you do come over make sure to look us up ... we always try to welcome overseas guests.
