Renee:
I have "HEARD" about your homecoming mums -- but have never seen one in person. My 2 nephews live in Tx and have talked about them.

All I can say is: oh my Gawd! I am so speechless!
How does one wear this creation?

Cheryl

Oh have mercy Renee!!

I'd sell 'em if they'd buy 'em here, Lucky for me I haven't had to make one of those since I left OKC. Lots and lots of staples!!

Good job girl!!

How much do ya get for that??

I LOOOOOOOOOVE those Texas Homecoming Mums. Those things are sooooo cool.

I love it

Take a look and my new front and back model I debuted this year. Only in Texas. These things take forever to do, but they sure are a lot of fun.

They look like they are fun to make......as well as carry a hefty price tag. I heard a commentator one time tell the audience I was in that the Texas football mum corsages can top 200 dollars or more.

Quoted it at $150. Finished it and said "Man, they got a deal." It take me about an hour to do a custom this size. No designer labor, so only cost is the materials. When not doing custom mums, mlou and I can assemble 20-25 of our standard mums in an hour. They average $35-$40, again no labor...just me and mom.

I bet Clay's shop does some major mums. The smaller the town in Texas, the bigger the mums. It also hits during a fairly slow time during the year, no big holidays in October....increasing cash flow (and about 50% are cash sales).

The DIYs and the craft stores have taken a lot of business away from the florists over the last couple of years. I didn't have 1/2 the orders this year as I did last year. They do bring in the bling though, but there is a lot of labor and the chotchkes are a little pricey.

Garters still sold pretty well; mostly with the younger kids. I even got an order for a 3-yr-old. He was so cute. Our Homecomings are really early here in Austin. My first one was September 12th. Every penny counts during that dry month as well.

Love these! Especially the cha-ching!

Cheryl,

We staple one or two #3 ribbon loops on the backside of the mum...
The girl is suppose to pin this loop to her bra strap thru her shirt.

You can always see a few girl who have pinned them on wrong...

They don't seem to like the front and back mum here in Houston...too hard to sit in class with them on. (by the way, you may want to put the fuller mum in front and the simpler mum in back)

Renee has had many mums ordered as a triple mum to be pinned on the top with a single or double mum to be pinned at the waist and braids connecting the two groups...

The Cheerleader that ordered this one had so many mumd last year that she had to pin them on her back so she preferred the over the shoulder triple. Usually I would have put the larger mum in the front, but she wanted it and the bear in the back. Since her boyfriend was paying the big bucks, I gave her what she wanted.

I have heard rumor of your homecoming mums also. Man, wish they would sell here...never in a million years.
Crazy what some people spend their money on..but traditions hold strong.
Good for you and the Bling and Ching!

Good grief, do they need a back brace to wear those things? Glad we don't do those here either.

Trish

Thanks for sharing your pictures. I've never seen anything like them! Wow! How many do you sell in one season? Are they individually customized, other than the school colors? Is this just for one school's homecoming, or do you make them for many schools throughout the fall?
Someone posted something about comfort of wearing them in school - do girls wear these in school all day or are they just for the football game and pep rally?

We serve many area high schools, some have formal dances for homecoming, some less formal. Wrist corsages and a small hand tieds are our fall staples. We also make pin on corsages/bouts for the band & senior football/cheerleading parents to wear at the game, and of course, roses for the homecoming court. I had heard football mum corsages were popular in other parts of the country, but never did I imagine them to be so elaborate.

I'm obviously intrigued! Thanks again for sharing.

Things differ throughout the state and within each city. The inner-city schools here really don't wear the big mums; they prefer small carnations with a few 9in streamers. It seems to be true that the smaller the town-the bigger the mum. The smaller towns and suburbs that surround Austin all wear the large ones.
I make them for 5 differnt high schools and all of the mums are personilzed with names, sports, band, clubs and what year they are going to graduate.
The DIYs have really hit our local flower shops pretty hard, so I don't make nearly as many as I did a few years ago.
Here in Pflugerville the girls are wearing them to school and the pep rally, but they have been taking them off for the game and dance.
When I was in HS (many moons ago) the mums were real and we wore them all day through the game and dance, so thinks have changed.
I'd be interested to hear from the other Texas florists here about their mum trends.

We used to make about 1,500 each year, but due to DIY, Hobby Lobby, & Michaels we now do a little over 500. About 1/2 of those are for one school. We sell in the school during lunch. The school receives 15% of sales as a fundraiser (another reason why mom & I make them all to eliminate the labor of having our staff involved). The average mum at this school is $40.

We have two other schools in the area with $40-$45 average mums and two schools with $75-$100 average mums.

Most schools do not allow the kids to wear them to school anymore due to the distraction they cause and the competition of it all. Most kids wear them to the football game only and wear a corsage to the dance.

Mums sales in Houston are totally different than small town Texas. In the smaller towns mums often top $100 and include lights, bears, boa feathers, music, you name it. Think glammed up trailer trash. The tackier the better. They really "put on the dog"! (I'm guessing our friends across the pond are loving that phrase!)

Here's a photo of how we sell at the school ~

That's amazing! I didn't realize you were using silk mums, but that makes so much sense. You can make up your bases during the slow, summer months and zap them together as the orders are place. Very cool.

I always thought living in a small town would be fun!
