Today we had a funeral order for the horse shoe. After much discussion, we decided that none of us knew 100% which direction the horseshoe should go. Doesn't it mean one thing if it is open at the top and another thing if it is open at the bottom?

Or, does it even matter. Should we just consider the design and how it looks and forget whether it is up or down?

The old "adage" is if it is upside down all the luck will run out. So, if you want to hold to tradition you should make it U shaped.

Being of Irish extraction... the open end is always up. Even if you're dead you apparently need to keep the luck in one place. ;)

couple of years ago we made one with the open end up, delivered it to the funeral home. the funeral home called and had us rehang it upside down on the easel
i tried to explain about the luck thing, but to no avail

Sometimes the Funeral Director can be somewhat moronic. ;)

As I understand it, depends what people believe in your area of the country. For example, some parts believe the horseshoe should face open side up so the luck won't run out and in other parts of the country the horseshoe is seen with the open end down so the luck will pour out over you for anyone walking underneath. The good news is, you can never be wrong. Just be able to provide the correct philosophy with the direction of the horseshoe. Some people feel the a horseshoe pointed down keeps the devil away.

a little trivia.....

IF the person for whom this piece was done lived a POSITIVE LIFE, the horseshoe faces up, to reflect a full glass/half full glass environment.
IF the person lived a life that continually reflected a negative, or empty glass, the horseshoe faced down.
The "two o'clock" theory came from race tracks that used to put their start lines at the 2 o'clock position compared to the finish line.
I think it no longer matters, so long, as you at least have a quick "theory" as to why you made it as you did!!
