We have a bride that wants a pomander to sit on top of a 20" high eifle tower vase.
I'm thinking a 4" oasis ball on top of the vase. It will be covered with red carns.
Do you know how many carns would be needed (no greens, no filler)
Any suggestions for mechanics?

Hi Chantelle,

A 4" ball may be too small visually, but it will take about 18 carns that are fully open and cut all the way to the calix. You can obviously make them larger simply by cutting the stems longer. For every inch longer the stem is, add at least another dozen. Problem is, you would really be making a lot of insertions in that ball.

Mechanics would be go around the ball with waterproof tape to add extra strength to the foam to make sure it does not break. If you can have anything inside of tower, insert a hyacinth stake or color stick through the ball before taping it. If nothing can show, I would use the Lomey tray adapter glued on and taped on.

After done, use the spray adhesive inside around stems of carns to make sure they are not dropping out during the festivities.

It isn't as simple as it seems, CHARGE enough for your efforts! One seems pretty quick, 20, not as quick.

I agree the 4" ball is too small for the number of insertions, and for the visual weight of the design.
I usually use the 8" ball, with 75 carnations cut to a 1" stem, and inserted till the calex is nestled into the oasis.
For extra security, we first wrap the ball with either chicken wire,(very hard on the hands, and difficult to bend, and expensive), or use the foam protective covers that come with asian pears in the grocery stores, or the covers they use to protect fugi mums, or imported gerbera. I think oasis has just introduced a similar product for pennies. Or , of course, just wrap a few rounds of 1/4" tape around the ballbefore beginning.

You can get the same EFFECT by using the largest of the round GALA bouquet holders..........cutting the carns same length..........and you have increased stability becasue of the CLEAR handle to go down in the vase.

Like Rick I have used the gala holders. Far more stable.

They should fit.........there are varying sizes of gala holders...........With a one inch opening ( You are going to have a hard time balancing a oasis sphere on top.........Better to use the bouquet holder or alter the design to give you more stability )

Yep,I use holders also. Much easier and more stability.

You can also attach a lomey universal piece to the bottom of the sphere and then attach a small piece of the center plastic to give that stability you are looking for...if you cannot find a holder to fit..

We recently attended a show where the used a large oasis ball and pinned gaylax leaves to a small area at the base-- (to keep it from sinking down on the glass) then designed the ball all around--but be advised--it uses a Lot of carns--over 100 standard--beautiful look but NOT CHEAP!!

Last year I made speres out of red roses...over 250 went into each one...they were water tubed and picked into styro balls...I will look for the pictures and post if I can find it...

Ok found it...This is just the ball...This sat ontop of a large fluted vase..

Then had curly willow inserted and crystal hung from those and then 5 calla lilies shooting out from the ball...

I was contracted by another event florist to do these for her...it was a huge undertaking and took 85 man hours to do 20 of these suckers...plus build and decorate a curley willow chuppah the onsite setup was brutal and because it was not my gig, the event florist didn't have enough experienced help, hours or space secured for the job which made it worse...and the venue didn't follow through on what they said we would have for time because they booked a small party just before the wedding and took some space they promised away from our space...I felt like Jeff Latham and wanted to throw the vases, curley willow and everythong else at people and smash things on the floor, but didn't...I jept my cool, because in the end it wasn't my job or my name at stake...thank God!

So many replies, I'm a getting a little confused!!
So with the 20" eifle tower vase with a 1" opening - what size sphere would you suggest (or what size bouquet holder) and how many carnations do you think it would take?

I was working on a wedding estimate on a similar style. This style is from the John Henry wedding book and it shows a carnation topiary. This one also uses a 4" sphere and the recipe states that you need 60 carnations for this design.

Therefore (note of caution) don't undersell this design! It might take more flowers than you think.

Standard carns or mini carns? I can't imagine putting 60 stems in that small of a sphere!

Full size carnations. It says nothing about minis. You can see in the photos that they are not minis. If you have the John Henry wedding book it is item #WS72-21.
