I have been contracted by another forist to do some of a job for her....The job consists of 3-400 5 rose clusters to attach to a curley willow chuppah, 21- 200 rose spheres in styro each rose in a tube and set up of the chuppah and centerpieces on Saturday...

I will be doing the floral work alone and the set up I will have 2 other helpers...

I am mainly trying to get an idea on how to lay out my week for time in the making of these items...I have never ever done anything of this magnatude and am having a difficult time trying to even guess the time involved...my initial guess was 20-30 man hours just for construction of the job not including set up..

Just a question? Why would you use Styro and water pics? When you can use an oasis sphere and just poke the roses in? That would save you an immense amount of time! AND if you made them by picking them by the time you turned them upside down (they need to be a ball right?) the water would leak out.
You can shave off half your labor time. If you did it this way I would think 20 hours would be a safe bet to quote even if you didn't use it all.
You can do these quite a few days out with if they are in oasis, crowning glory and into the frig.

Not my job, I have been contracted by another florist to complete these for her, her way...

Oh I see. Hmmm, does she still use chicken wire also?
If that is the case, I would say at least 30 and you can't do them as far ahead either because roses will suck a tube dry overnight.
Good Luck with that one Lori. Good Grief.

300-400 5 rose clusters, not in water tubes, just tied, not wired etc etc?
6-7 hours. I'd process & cluster them at the same time, and keep them in shallow rubbermaids w/a short layer of oasis & water to keep them standing. If they're water tubed, I"d change that to stryo in the bins. If they're wired you're screwed ;)

21 styro spheres of 200 water tubed roses? I'd water tube as you process, then stick them on styro boards in rubbermaid bins in the cooler for storage - 14+ hours (5 roses per minute=840 minutes=14 hours - allow 2 -3 extra hours. This is just to process & clean & watertube.)
Then assembly Friday of those 21 spheres - 11+ hours - 2 per hour if you're lucky.

My mathematical guess is 33 hours for the beginning in shop work, then a lot more onsite. It never works out right, but it's a decent estimate to start with.

Good luck!

It won't take that long to do any of this if everyone works as a team, and also just an FYI, make sure you have in the contract with the other florist you are no responsible for complaints,,,,,. I hope you are charging them about a good amount of money for this work, gosh, I hope the shop didn't undercut so that you get stuck...

I've worked with this woman before...She is Russian and does many, many russian weddings...She charges good money for the job, knowing she may contract out the job because of time...she pays well and fair...she is very picky who she will work with...I do not need to let her know the hours I am expecting this to take, I am just trying to calculate my week and not make over promise myself to out side hour commitments if I will be here working for my second job...my shop is really slow right now, so this is a great way for me to get some extra money for me...and if I can do it while I am stuck here lokking at the wals then that will be a bonus..

Good grief I read this entire thread and ....I'm lost I thought you had to make the spheres at first read then when I got to Tracy's post and well...do you have to make the spheres or not?

Great idea getting extra work for yourself while the shop is slow.

For assembly of the spheres .... I think she is making the spheres, but they have to be water tubed. No reason to do that all at once, when watertubing can be done ahead. :)

I think it's a great way to make some extra $$ if you're not busy, and to get some experience doing something out of your normal realm of work.

Holy crapoli, think of how many you could do in an hour in oasis! And do much farther ahead of the event. Tracy, do you do them this way?

I've never made a rose sphere, or flower orb or whatever, other than for flowergirls. Teeny tiny and super easy, in oasis. My guess is that oasis would be uber-heavy for a chuppah, though styro with water picks & roses would probably be just as heavy I suppose. I also would worry about the oasis splitting, unless the dreaded chicken wire was used as support - all the weight of 200 rose heads ..... but I'd love to make it, especially on another shop's dime! ;)

Read Lori's original post again, please.

The 3 to 400 roses clusters are to consist of 5 roses each, to be attached to the Chuppah. The Chuppah is made of willow.

The 21 rose spheres are to consist of 200 roses each, water tubed, and in an oasis sphere. This will be a pretty large orb, and will be the centerpieces.

This can be done, in much the fashion Tracy has outlined. If you have no other help during the week, Tracey's time estimate would be a good one.

I would also allot ample time to tie all these little clusters on to the chuppah -- it will take time!

I thought about why she is having you use watertubes & stryo for the spheres. Its's the weight.......pure & simple. Second reason may be that she does not realize that balls can come as large as you need in Oasis.

If the wet oasis sphere was used, it would be super heavy. Styro will be much lighter.

Lori, you should be able to tube all the sphere roses, and perhaps make at least 60 to 80% completed in the shop, leaving the bottom to be done on site.

You also didn't tell us if these are going up in the air, or where....and also what size sphere you are making.

Good luck!

Cheryl

Hi, Your times for prep sound in range-I would be more concerned about fixing (securing)that many roses into the styro with the tubes-even the weight in styro will amount-the next issue would be space-do you have the space in your cooler? One more thing -that many roses hanging on willow alone....is there another form(pipe)?under the willow? Maybe zip-ties.The hardest thing is the on-site work especially if youre working with someone elses plan. Get as much information ahead of time(before you offer any time requirements) Make a how-to video as you go...we will all benefit :) Charlotte

If you get the chance to post some pics, I would LOVE to see this wedding when it's set up. The chuppah sounds amazing!

I have talked with this lady some more...The orbs are going up on a martini glas, hence the concern for weight...this is the reason for styro and tubes...The black magic roses will be coming to me prepped, leaves stripped and cut down and tubes filled and ready to go...I will just recut and assemble. the roses will be fully opened and hydrated as to not suck up so much water after being put in the tubes...

The martini glass will be filled with the rose petals from the processed roses...

I am planning on 30 additional hours to my week hopefully most of that will be during shop hours and some during my personal time...then the additional time on Saturday night...

The fact that I do not have to process the flowers is huge or fill tubes...

Ok now for the aspect of it, sorry, about what I am about to say,,,if everyone actually read the post about it being orthadox, < Mispell I know> No water or spillage on the bhema, ,,,that is why as well,,,,Sorry,

A sneak peek at what the centerpieces look like

The first is what I have done. There will be 5-6 callas added, curley willow and brapes of crystals on site. They will be on a tall pilsner vase....

the other pictures are of the chuppah that will be created and the inspiration photo for these centerpieces...
