I've been getting an unusual number of people calling to ask about whether or not we sell rose petals.
Of course we do, but usually for weddings...guest tables or aisles or rose petal cones, so I have a formula that I can work with to figure out how many cheaper roses I can purchase, in addition to my regular order, to get the number of square feet of petals I need.
Oh and by the way, I do not use the guard petals, or bruised roses etc...only great petals from roses with shorter stems. ie 30 or 40 cm.
This is really much simpler, except for some reason I can't figure it out.
It's for the guy, or gal, who calls and says "How much do rose petals cost?"
How to describe the quantity? A shoebox full? A bread box full?
I'd like to have a pat answer. I saw on a website last week where they quoted 1000 rose petals for $29.95. Now call me stupid, but I don't get how one would come to this number, or price, or explainable size/vs quantity.
Any help out there? Please?
JP

I have seen rose petals quoted in measurements of cups. To me, this is still not a clear picture measurement to most people. We have compared the volume of rose petals to our customers to items such as a gallon of milk, pail of ice cream or one of the smaller containers, that you buy at the store.

I would imagine that they are quoting the number of petals a rose has...every rose comes with a petal count...some more than others, if you are just ripping the roses apart and know ahead of time how many petals each should have you can count that way and throw in an extra rose at the end, noone will ever count 1000 petals...

I would sell them in pint containers of quart containers like they have at the deli, see how many roses it takes to fill then price...people generally can understand the sizing of those containers..

We too have been getting more than one request (and sale) a week for rose petals. Mostly for wedding proposals they tell us.

We sell them at regular rose price, torn apart and into corsage bags, each rose X $3.75. With enough advanced notice, I will buy some short 40CM roses and tear them apart by the bunch for $25.00... but that's a LOT of petals...

Generally everyone that buys the petals also buys 1-2 dozen vased as well...

We offer a medium corsage box full for $10 and I tell shoppers it usually takes 2-3 boxes to do a pattern like a heart on a bed. Colors limited to what we have in-stock unless orders are placed in advance. We'll only sell soft roses for petals since the petals from tight heads are usually unattractive.

The rose heads should be at room temp when the petals are pulled or they'll later show bruising. We always try to talk folks out of using white petals since they bruise so easily.

1 box (3-4-5 flower heads): A light sprinkling on a table top, bed or in a bath tub.

I sell a corsage bag full for $20. and I do sell the guard petals. when they want to know the volume on that I compare it to a quart or a 1/2 of a 1/2 gallon. people get that.

I think people are taking baths with them, or doing other naughty things with them. sweet!

We sell a corsage bag full for $4.99 at valentines, otherwise it is priced by the rose. We certainly have had more requests for them.
We also sell them for $4.99
We don't usually have them ready to go because the roses are too tight. We use guard petals (not terrible ones) or older roses because they are softer and come apart nicely. If they are too tight, the petals don't look nice, especially the ones closer to the center.
If we have a request, we set aside a few roses, let them blow and then put them in a corsage box.

On our wedding night my husband had the maids at the hotel fill the entire bed with petals between the sheets....Is that naughty? The staff was all whispering to each other when we came to breakfast the next morning, I knew what they were whispering about!
:) The path from the door to the bedroom was heavily coated in lavender petals as well as the bed on our wedding night. Candles everywhere. It was simply amazing.

But I did have to laugh when the petals had turned into semi-potpourri the next morning. :)

For quantities, we quote them by the zip loc bag size, since most people can envision what those are. A snack size bag will fragrance a bath tub. A sandwich size bag will make a nice trail from the front door, up the stairs ...
