I called a flower shop in Erie PA last week to order birthday flowers for my mother who is in a nursing home. I always like to send her tulips her birthday is March 21.
I explained that I was a designer and I wanted ONLY tulips in a clear glass vase. I told them I didn't want any filler or tiki etc. Bupleurum or seeded euc would be acceptable if they felt it necessary.
The woman was very nice...I think the owner... She said she could do it for $35 plus tax. I asked how much for delivery and she said oh we'll be going there anyway. So she didn't charge for delivery. My total $37.10 on my debit card.
On Sunday I drove to visit my Mom for Easter and the picture below shows the arrangement I found! (sorry for the quality took it with my phone) I couldn't believe it. (My calculations)--The vase they used was the Teleflora Centennial Bouquet vase !! Retail should be about 31.98. There were 3 stems of double bloom lilies (3x 3.75= 11.25), and 13 tulips (13x 1.50=19.50). (25% labor= 15.68) Grand Total $78.41
This shop is going to go bankrupt!!! I almost feel bad. But what is so difficult about filling an order with JUST tulips in a glass vase?? I didn't ask for lilies OR a keepsake vase!! I just wanted something little. I almost feel like writing them a letter, thanking them for their generosity...but asking if they need help with their pricing!

If we were MD's or Attorney's....

we would just consider this professional courtesy. And to me it is hard to resist the temptation to do something extra from a legitimate member of the trade.

BTW.....

Do you know why Sharks never bite Lawyers.....

Professional Courtesy.

All the best,

What's the matter with me? Have I become so callous that I completely overlooked this aspect? *sigh* Thank you for your input. I'm going to call them today and thank them.
I don't own a shop, and I am always so cost conscious that is what I looked at first. My thoughts were from a designer's position. " My God, if the owner caught me sending this out for a $35 order, I'd be out the door!" :)

Not to mention that the arrangement is ugly as h*ll. Looks like a W*lmart bouquet stuffed into a vase. I hope you re-did it for your mom.

:> I didn't want to say that....thanks...

I think it's a great idea to contact the shop and thank them. But they do need pointers on how to arrange. I think some shops are afraid to do "just tulips" because they think it will look too grocery storeish, but I think there are ways to make it look contemporary and upscale without looking like it was "un-designed".

Oh My, I would be so gratiful that someone cared enough to do something extra, and also yeah it maybe not as your would do, but it is so wonderful to hear that someone is doing alittle extra, when I started reading your post, I thought oh here we go again, maybe about 5 tulips, and your got that, Blessing to that shop owner who gave enough, care, and repect to another person in the biz, or even someone in a nursing home, Because it is not a preety place to be, Wish this shop was in the area of myself when I was in one, Just a quick laugh, when I was in a assisted living place, One of my friends ordered an all white arrangment to make me feel better, Well I got a mache, with the biggest ugly arse arrangment I have ever seen, talk about depressed about this, Well dear, The moral of the story is thank Gosh someone cared engough to do the right things, and I think that we sometimes, Don't look at the things as we should, and it is so sad..Hugs to you,...

Yeah, I figured $75.00.....

That was nice of them, however they did not listen to the customer. Regardless that the customer was a florist she wanted only tulips....

I might have done the extra but with more tulips or upgrade to french tulips...Also, are the leaves on those tulips yellowing???

It is refreshing to hear of a shop giving professional courtesy, they at least tried to do you right....
