I haven't posted in a long time so I hope I'm doing it right.

It is long past time for me to get a new hosting company. What are the steps I need to follow to shut
down my present site and start a new site?

You must be kind and gentle with me because I am just a little 76 year old lady and this website "stuff" is not easy for me.

My present site is a disaster. I've tried to get my hosting company to make changes, but it is very difficult to get an answer to my emails and telephone calls. So, where do I start?

Can I ask why you're not happy with your website?

I know someone will come up and tell you the actual steps, but do NOT shut down your site before getting a new site ready to launch.

Find a new host/designer first, then go through the process of getting your new site ready, then transfer your old name to your new site.

Ryan, who hosts Flowerchat, designs websites.
So does Media 99.
So does Teleflora.

Each has users on here who can make recommendations for you.

Good luck!

Genevieve,

It's just like moving your phone service to a new address. :)

1) You have your existing service in place.
2) Get the new service set up, plugged in, turned on.
3) Tell the person in charge to throw the switch, and you have no down time.
4) Cancel service with the old provider. (You may want/need to notify them in advance, as some will have a 30+ day cancellation window.)

If you can give us more specifics about who you're cancelling with, and where you're moving to, I can give you more detailed instructions. You can also email me directly if any of the info is private: [email protected].

Call Ryan, he's awesome. :)

I really appreciate the replies.

We are one of the lucky shop owners that were/are in a good cash position. Sales are up about 5%. I think a good website is very important. We are in a small central California town that has been hit hard by this recession and so many foreclosures.

My next question is how to calculate what to spend on a website, design and maintenance, considering the small population we serve?

To Ryan, thank you I will be contacting you to learn
about your website service.

My website host has contacted me and made the changes I've requested. Now I know the power of
FlowerChat.

Genevieve,

The investment in a website can be determined by a number of factors. Some of those include the amount of competition (local and OG), quality of competition, impact you want to make.

In a small town, you can get away with basic and boring, to some extent, but even if you rank well you may not be converting a lot of sales. On the other hand, you may want to create a great online experience to create an amazing impression of your business, even if the audience is small.

Hey, Basic and Boring??? Why am I taking so many pictures !! LOL
G, my website is an investment that I can make as much my own as I can. (Thanks to Strider). I may not see a lot of "orders come through" but many many customers call stating "I'm looking at your website". You may want to ask out of town customers if they've visited your site.
